President Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has restated his obligation to safeguarding a violence-free election on December 7.

Speaking during a virtual meeting on the UN General Assembly, he revealed that his administration’s primary objective is to promote peace in the upcoming polls to uphold the country’s democratic credentials on the African continent.

“We are keenly aware of the reputation Ghana has built as a tolerant and working democracy and we have every intention to nurture and improve upon it”.

In furtherance, he noted his unrelenting mission to ensure and oversee a fair and transparent electoral process.

“It is a matter of great pride to me that in spite of the difficulties of conducting an election during a pandemic, I am able to state that all Ghanaians are agreeing that we have to work together to ensure that the election will be transparent, free, fair, safe and credible”.

The comments from the President is founded on some assertions made by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) accusations on the incumbent government’s involvement in  dabbling in activities likely to lead the country into chaos.

According to the NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, the Electoral Commission (EC) is an incompetent institution scheming with the current administration to alienate Ghanaians in the December elections.

“A voter register is the most important document in any election. If the voter register is not credible or is full of errors; it makes it difficult to have free, fair and transparent elections”. That is why at a point, I said the EC should be prepared to take the blame if this country descends into chaos”.

He further called on the international community to as a matter of urgency intervene in the electoral processes in Ghana.

“As things are going, we are not comfortable with the way the processes leading to the election. We call on the international bodies. They should take an interest in what is happening in Ghana. We want international electoral observers should come long in advance to supervise the electoral process.”

Meanwhile, John Mahama is expected to speak today, Thursday, September 24, 2020, on the supposed missing names on the electoral roll.

A statement signed by the NDC’s Campaign Spokesperson, James Agyenim-Boateng indicated that the address will be delivered at the party’s headquarters in Accra.

“The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama will on Thursday speak to the nation from the NDC headquarters in Accra at 1 pm on the integrity challenges of the electoral process and unfolding events that threaten to undermine Ghana’s stability and democracy,” said the statement.

The NDC had alleged that the ongoing voters’ exhibition exercise has been fraught with electoral irregularities.

Also, the Electoral Commission has convened an Inter-Party Committee (IPAC) meeting scheduled for September 24, to iron out lingering concerns following the commencement of the voters’ register exhibition exercise.
