I Am Grateful For Your Compassion And Unending Devotion- Adwoa Safo To President Akufo-Addo

Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo, MP for Dome-Kwabenya

Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has expressed her gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for his support during her difficult moments as the Gender Minister.

According to her, it has been an honour serving this “all-important ministry” for a short time. She revealed that during this period, the ministry put in place some mechanism to ensure a “harmonious society where the survival of women, children, persons with disabilities as well as other vulnerable persons” in the society can be guaranteed. This, she emphasized, is in line with the vision to transform the social protection framework into a robust and more responsive one.

“I am exceedingly grateful for your understanding, compassion, and unending devotion throughout this past year, especially during a very difficult period for me where I have had to be away from office. Your kind support has been very much welcome and for that.”

Adwoa Safo

Acknowledging receipt of her termination letter as a Gender Minister, Adwoa Safo, equally expressed her gratitude to serve in the portfolio. She indicated that she has handed over all “official assets” to the administrator of the ministry.

Contained in a statement, the Dome-Kwabenya legislator stated that the move to relieve her of her duties as a minister will afford her the opportunity to focus more on the developmental needs of her constituents.

“Cognizant of my duties to the 75,000 constituents who elected me, this development is opportune and will afford me more time to concentrate on my Parliamentary responsibilities and Constituency engagements as well as consolidate the gains we have made as a government at the Constituency level in our quest to break the eight.”

Adwoa Safo

It will be recalled that President Akufo-Addo on July 28, 2022, revoked Adwoa Safo’s appointment as a Gender minister after Parliament postponed a decision on her status as a representative of her constituency.

Majority calls for dismissal of Adwoa Safo as MP

Prior to this, the majority in parliament and some section of the minority had expressed the need for her seat to be declared vacant, owing to chronic absenteeism from sittings.  However, in May, Adwoa Safo attributed her long absence from Parliament to family issues, saying, among others, that her son was unwell. She accused some Minority MPs members and a number of her colleague Majority MPs of engaging in a political witch hunt against her.

Commenting on the development, Executive Director for Parliamentary Network Africa, Sammy Obeng, revealed that the privileges committee of parliament must discuss and make final decisions on the case of embattled Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwo Safo, over her absenteeism in parliament.

He indicated that once the report has been laid in parliament, it suggests it is the final report from the committee which per the normal process, it has to be laid.

Touching on the majority’s decision on the privileges committee to push for Adwoa Safo’s seat to be declared vacant, Mr Obeng stated that he will be “particularly scandalised if there is any lesser repercussion” on the pathway that the MP for Dome-Kwabenya had taken the privileges committee and perhaps the entire Ghana through.
