A highlight of the 2024 event crowned Samuel Pobee as the Mining Personality of the Year. With over two decades of experience as a mining engineer and an INSEAD MBA graduate, Mr. Pobee’s leadership has been transformative, especially at the Iduapriem Mine.
In an interview following his win, Samuel Pobee attributed his success to teamwork and inspired leadership, stating, “I would like to thank my Lord Jesus Christ for the protection He has given me thus far.”

Under Pobee’s leadership, Iduapriem Mine achieved significant milestones that positioned it as a beacon of excellence.
His acknowledgment of the collective effort resonated deeply with the audience when he noted, “It is not surprising that in the same event, Iduapriem Mine was named the Mining Company of the Year. This reflects our shared vision, hard work, and dedication.”
When Mr. Pobee assumed leadership of Iduapriem Mine in 2021, the mine was facing significant challenges. He spearheaded the Mpuntupa Program—a strategic initiative named after a Ghanaian term meaning “good progress.”
This program focused on five key pillars: people, sustainability, safety, production, and long-term strategic planning.
“In 2021, the mine was struggling. By 2022, it was a work in progress, and by 2023, we had a solid foundation.
“Our focus on people was critical. With the right training, empowerment, and inspired leadership, employees delivered beyond expectations.”

The ‘Mpuntupa Program’ yielded transformative results, including increased production, improved safety records, and enhanced relationships with host communities.
Pobee’s approach was underpinned by his belief in leaving a lasting positive impact on communities, stating, “We don’t want our host communities to feel like they are stuck with us. Instead, we want them to desire our presence and support our operations.”
Commitment to Sustainability and Environmental Stewardship
A core aspect of Mr. Pobee’s leadership philosophy is sustainability. He shared insights into Iduapriem Mine’s commitment to environmental stewardship, which has set a benchmark for other mining operations in Ghana.
“One of AngloGold Ashanti’s purposes is to empower people and advance societies.
“For us, sustainability is not just a regulatory requirement—it’s the right thing to do. We must leave the environment in a better form than we met it.”

One standout achievement under Pobee’s leadership was the implementation of a groundbreaking resettlement project. The initiative, lauded as the best in Ghana, has become a reference point for regulators and other mining companies.
“This project highlights what is possible when sustainability is prioritized. Our goal is to create self-sustaining communities that thrive long after mining operations have ceased.”
