Bridget Otoo, GTV Engage in a Heated Exchange

Ghanaian journalist and broadcaster, Bridget Otoo has found herself in a fiery exchange with the administrator of the state-owned Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), following her comments on Woezoer TV’s promotion on the President’s social media handles.

The banter, which unfolded on X (formerly Twitter), saw both parties exchanging sharp remarks about media management, governance, and financial sustainability.

Bridget Otoo, known for her outspoken nature, sparked the conversation with a tweet directed at President John Dramani Mahama, humorously requesting a temporary appointment as Director-General of GTV.

“Dear @JDMahama, could you please appoint me as DG of @GTV_Ghana for one week? I want to do something small for there.”

Bridget Otoo

Her comment, seemingly laced with sarcasm, quickly caught the attention of GTV’s X account administrator, who responded with a direct correction regarding the appointment process.

“Dear @Bridget_Otoo, the job application you’ve written should rather be sent to the National Media Commission and not @JDMahama. As a journalist, I’m sure you know the NMC is the appointing body of the GBC D-G. #posco.”

Not stopping there, GTV’s administrator further took a swipe at Bridget Otoo’s current employer, pointing out that GBC had invested in the station decades ago but had yet to see any returns.

“It is the foresight of GBC that brought about Metro TV, where you are currently employed. Since GBC invested in Metro TV more than three decades ago, GBC is yet to get a return on investment. Focus your attention on how to get your organization to post a profit.”

Bridget Otoo, undeterred by the responses, fired back, questioning the functionality of the GBC board and insinuating political influence over its operations.

“Which board? The one with Ayeboafo, Boamah, etc? Are they still functioning? just as you believe I am responsible for the financial fortunes of Metro TV, the real appointing authority will instruct them to do so… Mtseeewwww.”

Bridget Otoo

She further expanded on her stance in a detailed response, arguing that GTV’s social media engagements reflect management approval and suggesting that the state broadcaster had long been sustained by taxpayer funds without significant returns.

“We can all agree that GTV is free and not being gagged based on what their X account tweets and some of their ‘defenders’ will have you believe. If you know the structure of GTV, then you know nothing is put out without management approval. To state the obvious, this was sanctioned by management, the apex of it is the Director General.

“GTV doesn’t need the likes of Olele to agend for them. I also want to congratulate them for this ‘exciting’ new era. Hopefully, they transfer this energy to the screen for us to watch without being forced/blackmailed to. It’s also interesting to note that some of the taxpayer’s money they’ve been breastfed and spoon-fed with for decades has been ‘invested.’ But just like their output on the screen, their investments are insignificant.”

Bridget Otoo

GBC, as Ghana’s oldest broadcasting institution, has struggled to remain competitive amid financial and operational difficulties.

The corporation has relied on government subventions to sustain its operations, while private media houses have increasingly dominated viewership and advertising revenue.

The media personality expressed her disappointment over currently failing to receive an appointment from the NDC government despite all the hard work she put in for the party during her campaign.

Otoo took to X (formerly Twitter) to vent, expressing all her emotions by sharing only a short, two-word sentence, “Monkey worked,”.

Social media users immediately decoded her post, which is a reference to the saying, “monkey dey work, baboon dey chop”, meaning one person works hard for another to enjoy.

The post, coming soon after the announcement of Joselyn Dumas’ appointment as Deputy Director for Diaspora Affairs, was thought to be related to that.

Bridget Otoo was a persistent thorn in the flesh of the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, fighting them on different issues on social media.

She is thought to have played a crucial role in exposing the previous government’s rot leading to them being kicked out.

However, despite all her hard work, Bridget Otoo is yet to receive any acknowledgement while a lot of celebs, most of whom played far less influential roles, are getting appointments.
