Concerns Raised Over Nature of Awards Given to Winners at GMA

The Ghana Movie Awards (GMA), established in 2010, aim to celebrate and recognize the achievements of filmmakers, actors, and other industry professionals in Ghana’s burgeoning film industry.

Over the years, these awards have garnered significant attention and prestige, serving as a benchmark for excellence in Ghanaian cinema.

However, recent editions of the awards have raised concerns regarding the nature of the awards given to winners, prompting discussions among stakeholders, industry professionals, and the public.

In an exclusive interview with The Vaultz News, Ghanaian actress, musician, and model, Safowaa_Blaqbarbie disclosed how the Ghana Movie Awards has impacted the careers of filmmakers, actors, and other industry professionals.

She believes that the Ghana Movie Awards has indeed had a positive significance to the film industry and has impacted many great talents since its initiation.

“On this platform, lots of great personalities who have strived through sleepless nights to bring smiles to the faces of audiences are acknowledged and appreciated for their work, which is worth celebrating.”

Traditionally, awards ceremonies are expected to provide tangible recognition to winners, often in the form of trophies, plaques, or certificates.

However, the Ghana Movie Awards have been criticized for its approach to awarding winners, which some perceive as unusual or lacking in substance.

Critics of the awards, including film critics and audiences, have taken to social media and public forums to voice their concerns.

They argue that the Ghana Movie Awards should strive for excellence and aim to elevate the Ghanaian film industry on an international scale.

Arnold Baidoo, an entertainment pundit, recently voiced his disappointment with the plaques presented to winners at the 14th Ghana Movie Awards, particularly calling them “woven fans painted with the Ghana flag.”

In response, the actress expressed her thoughts on Arnold’s opinion and the event’s credibility and prestige.

“I think Arnold only shared an opinion of what he thought could have been done better. However, as we are all entitled to our opinions, I believe in every culture there are dynamics and room for change which clearly the new plague presented for the 14th edition shows how creative the CEO wanted to be. Yes, there could be room for improvement, but as long as it’s a creative initiative, it should be applauded before being criticized.”

Arnold Baidoo also mentioned that despite his criticisms, Fred Nuamah, the CEO of the Ghana Movie Awards, deserves support and encouragement.

Safowaa_Blaqbarbie, however, stated that event organizers can only keep doing their best “As we live in a society where criticism is inevitable no matter the effort you put in.”

“A prestigious event such as this takes lots of work to put together. So, I think the organizers should keep doing their best while taking into consideration the criticism that they can work with to add to their improvement but not to break a bone as they’re doing great so far.”

Many winners have expressed dissatisfaction with the physical awards presented at the ceremony. Reports indicate that some trophies are poorly made, lack creativity, or are not representative of the prestige associated with the awards.

This has led to questions about the quality and thoughtfulness behind the design of the awards.

Proposed Solutions

In recent years, there have been more conversations about the challenges facing the Ghanaian film industry, such as funding, distribution, and professional development.

On how the Ghana Movie Awards can contribute to solving some of these challenges moving forward, Safowaa_Blaqbarbie believes looking out and supporting young creatives would go a long way.

“With the challenges in question, I believe when the Ghana Movie Awards start to look out for young creatives and invest in their crafts to produce more creative movies, it will go a long way to affect even the already existing and well-known creatives positively as most of these existing creatives have been able to build their audience and it’s rather young creatives crying out for this support.”

Allegations of favoritism, lack of accountability, and potential conflicts of interest have surfaced, leading some to question the credibility of the awards.

Transparency in the nomination and voting process is essential for maintaining the integrity of any awards ceremony.

The categories of awards have also come under scrutiny. Critics argue that some categories seem arbitrary or lack clarity, leading to confusion among nominees and winners alike.

Additionally, the inclusion of certain categories while excluding others raises questions about the criteria used to determine what is worthy of recognition.

The Ghanaian actress revealed that the Ghana Movie Awards can enhance the credibility and fairness of the event by involving the audience so that they can appreciate the outcome.

“With all award schemes, involve audiences voting for every deserving creative to win a respective category. And as we have witnessed over the years, all winners deserve their respective categories as they all are great in the field, however, to ensure more fairness. I believe they can show the criteria with which they use to award winners to enable the audience to appreciate the outcome more.”

Streamlining the award categories and establishing clear criteria for nominations and selections would enhance transparency and fairness.

This could involve consulting industry professionals to ensure that the awards reflect the diversity and richness of Ghanaian cinema.

Implementing a transparent and accountable voting process, possibly involving independent auditors or industry experts, could help restore faith in the awards. Clear communication about the voting process and criteria would also enhance credibility.

The Ghana Movie Awards play a crucial role in recognizing and celebrating the achievements of the Ghanaian film industry.

However, concerns surrounding the nature of the awards given to winners highlight the need for improvement and reevaluation.

Ultimately, the goal should be to create an awards ceremony that not only honors excellence but also inspires future generations of filmmakers and artists in Ghana.
