This year’s Brit Awards nominees have been confirmed, with Dua Lipa, Celeste, and AJ Tracey among the top nominees.
All three of these artists have received a total of three nods, as have British rapper Headie One, singer-songwriter Arlo Parks and music duo Young T & Bugsey. The nominees for the upcoming awards show were announced today, Wednesday 31st March 2021, in a special live-stream.
Also, in the running are ‘Album Of The Year’ contenders J Hus and Jessie Ware, each with two nominations. Meanwhile, Harry Styles has also received a nod in the ‘British Single’ category. Little Mix have received one nomination for ‘Best British Group’, where they’re up against The 1975 for the third time.
Meanwhile, chart-topping star, Joel Corry has earned two nominations after having a huge hit with the MNEK collaboration, ‘Head & Heart’.
The 2021 winners will be announced at the Brit Awards ceremony on 11th May at London’s O2 Arena. Comedian Jack Whitehall will present the show for the fourth time, while Dua Lipa and rising star Griff will perform. Moreover, the show was delayed from its usual date in February because of the pandemic. However, it is not yet known what format the ceremony will take.
Lack of Female nominations in Brit Awards
Last year’s Brit Awards were notable for the lack of female nominees. In the four categories where men and women could compete, only three women received a nomination: Mabel, Miley Cyrus, and Norman.
Singer Paloma Faith and English singer and songwriter Charli XCX in an interview with BBC said it was unfair that women were least nominated for the awards.
“It’s a misrepresentation of society.

“Next year the Brits can do better”.

Female artists dominate the ‘best album’ category
A year after the Brits were criticized for a lack of female nominees, four women are up for the best album prize – the highest-ever total.
It seems the organizers of the award show heard their displeasure. For the first time, four of the five records nominated for ‘Best album’ are by women; Dua Lipa, Celeste, Arlo Parks, and Jessie Ware in the running.
Speaking about the nominations, Jessie Ware who has been nominated said: “It’s a pleasure to be surrounded by these incredible women, it’s a real treat”.
However, she is of the view that she won’t win the award since it’s the fourth time she has been nominated.
“This is my fourth time up for [a Brit] and I’ve always been the bridesmaid… I feel like I’m going to be the bridesmaid again.”

Meanwhile, in the ‘Best international female’ category, the competition was so stiff that two of last year’s most critically-acclaimed albums – Phoebe Bridgers’ ‘Punisher’ and Fiona Apple’s ‘Fetch The Bolt Cutters’, were denied a nomination.
