Since arriving in Ghana, American ace rapper, Kendrick Lamar, has been experiencing the country in diverse ways and one of such experiences, which engendered so much shock on social media was when he was spotted playing football at Jamestown.
Some netizens, upon seeing the video, expressed awe and surprise, as they couldn’t fathom how such a top celebrity will be on the streets of Accra playing football. To some of them, the ‘Alright’ crooner does not perceive fame as other people see it.
Kendrick, who is also a songwriter, record producer, and the only rapper who has won the Pulitzer Prize for Music, as part of his many activities in Ghana, also went to a game center to play video games with some children in Jamestown.
Kendrick Lamar, who is already among the most talked-about people on social media because of the anticipation towards the release of his latest album, ‘Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers’, was seen shooting some scenes of his music videos at the Laboma beach in Teshie, on the Accra-Tema beach road. He was also seen signing autographs for fans while on duty shooting his video. His actions and even his mere presence in the country has evoked many reactions from his fans and other music lovers.
“Kendrick is such a humble man. How many celebrities will be down to play football with ordinary people? This should send a huge message to some of our so-called celebrities,” one netizen remarked.
“Wow! Kendrick Lamar showing us all that fame is nothing. He is so cool,” another netizen commented.
Kendrick Lamar promotes album using ‘trotro’ buses
Aside from Kendrick’s numerous activities in Ghana, of which most have shocked netizens, the US rapper used branded commercial buses, locally called ‘trotro’ or ‘troski’, to promote his new album. These branded buses were placed on significant streets in the capital with inscriptions about his new album.
It is worth noting that Spotify promoted the photos of the branded Benz Sprinter buses. Per some reports, Kendrick Lamar’s visit to Ghana is part of a partnership project with the giant streaming platform to promote his album.
That notwithstanding, Kendrick Lamar will have an album listening party with a selected few Music Executives and culture enthusiasts at an undisclosed location. This is in addition to a documentary he’s shooting here in Ghana to activate the global release of his album, according to Spotify.
Kendrick Lamar officially announced the release of his album last month with a link to his Oklahoma website, which revealed the title and release date.
The album is split into two volumes of nine tracks; it features a string of notable collaborators, such as Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, Summer Walker, Ghostface Killah, Thundercat, Baby Keem, Sampha, and others.
The album repeatedly features the voice of Eckhart Tolle, who is described as “the spiritual teacher and author who narrates multiple songs”. Also, Lamar’s partner, Whitney Alford, is credited as a narrator on several songs, including ‘We Cry Together’, which also features a Florence and the Machine sample.
