Ghanaian high-life/ afrobeat singer and songwriter, Dennis Nana Dwamena, who is popularly known as Kidi, has said that he has had a phenomenal year despite the global pandemic.

The A-list artist made this assertion in an interview with the BBC Pidgin edition. He went on to note that indeed, COVID 19 had caused a slackening most especially, in the creative space, however, he has not been hit hard as two of his songs released to became a social media sensation.

“2020 for me has been phenomenal, amazing. I know it’s hard to say with everything going on around the world, but I keep saying that with every dark cloud there’s always silver linings, ‘Enjoyment’ is so huge, ‘Say Cheese’ is so huge”.

The award-winning artist, quickly added that he has become the toast of everyone because, he seems to be on the right track and doing something that the masses can relate to.

“I am just happy to have a lot of hit songs because it means I am doing something right, people are listening, people appreciate, when I step on stage they are ‘vibing’ with me, so it is a blessing for me”.

Touching on one of his current hit songs, ‘Say Cheese’, the artist noted that the song became a sensation all over social media and it spread across the world like a burning bush, even though at that instant, there was a lockdown in Ghana.

“Say Cheese was released in lockdown but that did not hurt it. It became a sensation on social media with people all over the world posting their videos to it”.

Kidi during the interview further emphasized that he was not surprised the song became a hit among today’s generation, who are mostly on social media, specifically Instagram.

This he based on the fact that the chorus of the music, talked about striking a pose and taking a picture and it is on social media that most people post their pictures. He said:

“It is not surprising that it hit the spot with the Insta generation, given the lyrics of the chorus: Say cheese, take a picture, strike a pose make I see you take a picture, say cheese take a picture”.

That notwithstanding, he also talked about how Davido jumped on his 2017 hit song, ‘Odo’. He mentioned that, because he had the opportunity to remix the song with the Nigerian superstar, it propelled him from being a rising star to becoming an actual star who everyone was ready to listen to.

That was only my second hit, and to have a global superstar like Davido jump on it, it took me from being just a kid that was coming up from Ghana to being the kid to watch, because everyone was jamming to that song.
