NDC Does Not Have The Right To Compromise The Peace Of This Country- Most Rev. Asante

Most Rev. Emmanuel Asante - Immediate past Chairman of the National Peace Council

The immediate past Chairman of the National Peace Council, Most Rev. Emmanuel Asante says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) should not be allowed to compromise the peace Ghana is currently enjoying.

He noted that, the NDC must appreciate the importance and make use of the 42 days set aside for election petition to seek redress in Court and not on the streets of Ghana, if the party is of the strong conviction that it has not been treated fairly in the just ended election.

“Former President Mahama and the NDC are saying they will not accept the results of the election, there is nothing wrong with that.

“They have every right to express their views, but they do not have the right to compromise the peace of this country in expressing their views.

“If they feel strongly that they have been given a raw deal, they should rather take the legal path to seek redress,” he said.

He further indicated that, the actions of the NDC puts under pressure the peace pact the presidential candidate of the party, former President Mahama and President-elect, Akufo-Addo signed prior to the 2020 general elections.

He urged the NDC to turn to the legal system to settle their claims and assertions.

“I am waiting to see that they take that step rather than hitting the streets, burning tires, and inciting people to match to different places to demand what they consider to be their right,” he said.

In the past week, a delegation from the National Peace Council led by its Chairman, Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi got attacked by angry NDC youth at the party’s national headquarters.

The delegation was at the party’s headquarters to engage leaders of the party on happening after the declaration of the 2020 presidential election result.

Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi said their main mission at the NDC’s headquarters was to dialogue with leaders of the party on the way forward to avoid any form of dispute in the country but was unfortunately met with the attack.

According to the Chairman of the Council, the said dialogue could not hold as some members of the delegation were indisposed after the incident.

“We were met with serious hostilities and violence at the NDC headquarters. As I speak now, board members who were part of the delegation are psychologically traumatized,” he stated on Thursday, December 10, 2020.

Members of the National Democratic Congress are still contesting the results of the 2020 presidential election as the party’s candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama has still not conceded to the declared results by the Electoral Commissioner, Jean Mensa.

Party’s flagbearer, executives, and members have continually reiterated their strong rejection of the 2020 presidential results.

On the contrary, members and sympathizers of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), say the NDC is just trying to do “damage control” as its argument of a rigged election is flawed. Some say the NDC will gradually come to accept and concede to the declared presidential results by the EC in due course.
