Mr. Beautiful Blames Twi Telenovelas For Collapse Of Ghanaian Movie Industry

Kumawood actor and comedian, Mr. Beautiful

Kumawood actor and comedian, Clement Bonney popularly known in the industry as Mr. Beautiful has voiced out his concerns about the harmful impact of foreign movies on the Ghanaian movie industry.

He said that the foreign movies aired on the Ghanaian television, especially, the ones with the local dialects are bringing down the Ghanaian movie industry, thereby, Ghanaians lose the interest of their very own.

In an interview, the actor expressed disappointment due to the lack of proper regulations surrounding TV station operations.

He said:

“A lot of licenses have been granted to TV station operators without any appropriate regulations, resulting in us making movies but not reaping any profits from them”.

Mr. Beautiful

The comedian believes that the Ghanaian movie industry has been harmed due to TV stations airing foreign movies, particularly those from Mexico, South Korea, India, the Philippines, and others, where the translation is done in the local dialect and with this attracts Ghanaians to pay more attention to them than the local movies.

He added that this occurrence has contributed to the collapse of the local movie industry.

Mr. Beautiful emphasized that in other countries, there are regulations in place to limit the broadcasting of foreign content and promote domestic production but Ghanaians do not have limitations in airing foreign content as compared to airing local content.

He urged that Government intervention will help the movie industry from coming to a complete standstill.

Mr. Beautiful says he sells coconuts to survive hardship in Ghana

Popular Ghanaian actor, Mr. Beautiful says to survive his perceived hardships in Ghana, he resorted to selling coconuts and sugarcanes.

The actor who has never hidden his support and love for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama told in an interview that the collapse of the Ghanaian movie industry has contributed to his current woes.

He said:

“The collapse of the movie industry has brought extreme hardships on some of us who are actively engaged in such a venture. In order to survive the hardships in Ghana due to the collapse of the movie industry, I now sell sugarcane and coconut.

“The coconut that I sell is the one that is grown in my hometown in Central Region which is Abura Dunkwa”.

Mr. Beautiful

His acting career may have been wrecked by his public support for former President Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2012 and 2016 elections, but Mr. Beautiful told in an interview that it is not enough reason for him to reject the party.

He told at the time that:

“I am ever ready to battle with my sweat and blood for Mahama. This is not about Mr. Beautiful and his love for Mahama, but now it is glaring that Mahama and the NDC administration performed better for the arts than the NPP has done in the last four years.

“I won’t just make empty claims but support my argument with facts, and those who think otherwise can come and challenge me. The NPP can never compare themselves to the NDC when it comes to their work for the creative arts sector”.

Mr. Beautiful

Mr. Beautiful’s affiliations with the National Democratic Congress(NDC) angered a lot of producers in Kumasi and movie lovers as well. Due to that, he was banned from acting especially with Kumasi movie producers for seven good years.
