As Ghana inches closer to the highly anticipated December 7, 2024, general elections, the political landscape in the Greater Accra Region is heating up.
The two major political parties—the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP)—have announced grand rallies to mark the conclusion of their nationwide campaigns.
With both events slated for Thursday, December 5, 2024, Accra is poised to become the epicenter of political activity, with expectations of massive turnout from party faithful and the general public.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced its final campaign rally under the theme “Resetting Ghana – Let’s Finish Strong!”
“The National Democratic Congress (NDC) wishes to inform its supporters and general public, that it will be concluding its 2024 election campaign with a mammoth Final Rally in the city of Accra.”
Sammy Gyamfi, National Communications Officer
According to a press release signed by the party’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, Esq., the event will take place at Zurak Park in Madina, Accra, starting at 12 noon.
This rally marks the climax of the NDC’s campaign efforts, during which the party has sought to position itself as the best alternative to what it calls the “failed leadership” of the New Patriotic Party.
The NDC’s campaign has centered on promises of economic recovery, job creation, and what it describes as a “restoration of hope for the ordinary Ghanaian.” The party has also highlighted issues such as corruption, inflation, and the rising cost of living as failures of the current administration.
Party stalwarts, including the 2024 presidential candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama, and his running mate, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, are expected to address the crowd.
The event is anticipated to draw thousands of supporters from across the Greater Accra Region and beyond, as the NDC seeks to solidify its position as the preferred choice for Ghana’s electorate.
“Let us finish strong and deliver the change that Ghana so desperately needs,” Sammy Gyamfi stated. Media houses have also been invited to cover the event, with the party offering accreditation through its Communications Bureau.
NPP’s “Possibilities Victory Rally”
Not to be outdone, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has also announced its final rally, dubbed the “Possibilities Victory Rally.” The event, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., will be held at the University of Ghana Sports Directorate Park, opposite the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
According to a statement signed by the NPP’s National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, Esq., the rally will serve as the grand finale of the party’s campaign activities.
The event will feature a star-studded lineup of party leaders, including “President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, and other key government officials.”
The rally’s theme reflects the NPP’s campaign slogan, “With God, It Is Possible,” which draws inspiration from Matthew 19:26 in the Bible.
The NPP has touted its achievements over the past eight years, including investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, as well as its flagship Free SHS program.
The party’s 2024 campaign has focused on providing “bold solutions” to Ghana’s challenges, with Vice President Bawumia leading the charge on promises of digital transformation, industrialization, and economic stability.
In its press release, the NPP encouraged all party members, sympathizers, and the general public to attend the rally.
“It is indeed time for bold solutions for Ghana’s next chapter,” the statement read. The event will be broadcast live on major media platforms across the country.
The decision by both parties to hold their final rallies in Accra on the same day has set the stage for a high-stakes showdown.
The Greater Accra Region, known for its diverse voter population, is a key battleground in Ghanaian elections. Both the NDC and NPP are pulling out all the stops to energize their base and secure last-minute votes in the region.
Beyond the presidential race, the rallies are also critical for parliamentary candidates vying for seats in the Greater Accra Region. With both parties fielding strong candidates, the region is expected to witness intense competition on election day.
Security agencies are expected to be on high alert to ensure peace and order as thousands of supporters from both parties converge on the capital.
The Ghana Police Service has yet to issue an official statement regarding measures to manage the rallies, but analysts expect a significant deployment of personnel to maintain law and order.
As the clock ticks down to December 7, the stakes could not be higher. Both the NDC and NPP are determined to leave an indelible mark with their final rallies, hoping to sway undecided voters and consolidate their support base. For now, all eyes are on Accra, where the nation’s political future hangs in the balance.
