Richard Ahiagbah Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Richard Ahiagbah has slammed the NDC over the disputed Parliamentary Seats, particularly the Ablekuma North Constituency. He condemned the NDC for taking the matter to court.

He raised critical concerns over alleged attempts by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to disrupt the electoral process in a disputed constituency.

“I think we should lean heavily on the police to conduct a proper investigation. But whatever the outcome of that investigation is, it will not help us arrive at the recollation that we need to be able to declare the winners of that constituency as it ought to be.”

He refuted claims by the NDC, that they had won the constituency. He stated;

“I heard Dr. Tanko talking about how they have won that constituency. It is not true. The pink sheets they are talking about that they have tabulated, and therefore, they have won—it’s not correct. They lost their election by some 411 votes.”

Ahiagbah added that his party had supported calls for a recount, but the NDC resisted such efforts.

Ahiagbah suggested that the fire incident and other irregularities raised reasonable suspicion of sabotage by the NDC.

He argued that their actions could be interpreted as an attempt to destroy evidence and influence the electoral outcome.

A key aspect of the dispute revolves around the destruction of pink sheets. He emphasized;

“Our pink sheets, what we have publicly now, is electronic. Fortunately for us, our people scanned them. The physical paper copy of the pink sheet was destroyed by their people at the collation center.

“By no means will scanned copies be legally acceptable if it goes to court. The original pink sheets had been vandalized by the NDC.”

He accused the opposition party of deliberately taking certain actions to disrupt the process. However, in places where the NDC won, he stated;

“What happened there? There was an order. There was no such disruption by the NDC people. The process was allowed to unfold, and therefore, they established who won and who did not win. At these places where the NDC knew they were losing; they started disrupting the processes so that they could muddy the waters and somehow gain additional [seats].

“If the NPP wins all the remaining seats, they will not get the two-thirds they are looking for. So, they are bent on destroying evidence and creating doubt in people’s minds so that this seat would go to them.”

Mr. Richard Ahiagbah Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

Ahiagbah acknowledged that the case is now in court and emphasized the importance of proving the destruction of the original pink sheets. He stated vehemently;

“When you go to court, specific evidence for how the pink sheet originally was destroyed will be established. And so, if there’s criminal participation of the NDC people in destroying that, that will be established. The court will take that into account and seek secondary evidence.”

Concerns Over Parliamentary Litigation

Ahiagbah also raised concerns about the potential implications of prolonged court cases on parliamentary proceedings.

“They feel that when you go to court, it will be stalled. The matters will be stalled in court. And so, therefore, there are people that have been declared [winners] who would go through parliament up until some time or maybe the end of term.”

Concluding his statement, Ahiagbah described the NDC’s actions as undemocratic and harmful to Ghana’s democracy.

He urged the opposition party to refrain from pushing narratives that undermine the country’s electoral processes.

“The NDC is trying to push a certain narrative in the country, and I think that it’s not healthy for our democracy. They lost their seats in question, but they are doing everything they can to seize some of them, and I think it’s not healthy.”

Richard Ahiagbah’s commentary highlights deep-seated tensions between the NPP and the NDC over disputed election results.

His allegations underscore the need for transparent investigations and judicial clarity to address the controversies and uphold Ghana’s democratic integrity.
