On December 2, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially inaugurated Phase 2 of the Tema Motorway Interchange.
Addressing a distinguished audience comprising government officials, traditional rulers, and residents of Tema, the President emphasized the project’s significance in Ghana’s broader development agenda.
President Akufo-Addo began his address by reflecting on the journey leading to the commissioning, highlighting the government’s promise made in June 2020 to swiftly embark on Phase 2 following the successful completion of Phase 1.
“I am proud to say that promise has been fulfilled. The completion of Phase 2 of the Tema Motorway Interchange is a defining moment in Ghana’s infrastructure narrative.”

President Akufo Addo underscored the importance of the interchange in alleviating traffic congestion, particularly along the critical Tema corridor, which serves as a gateway to Ghana’s largest seaport.
“By reducing delays and eliminating gridlock, we’ll expedite the movement of goods, enhance trade facilitation, and stimulate economic activity, not just within Ghana, but across the ECOWAS region.”

He noted that this development would reinforce Ghana’s position as a regional trade hub and contribute to realizing the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) goals.
Infrastructure: The Backbone of National Progress
President Akufo-Addo reiterated the government’s commitment to infrastructure development. He noted;
“Under my leadership, we have prioritized road development as a cornerstone of our government’s agenda, recognizing its profound impact on every aspect of Ghanaian life.”

The Tema Motorway Interchange Phase 2 is a comprehensive strategy to create a well-connected and globally competitive nation.
The President also mentioned other projects such as the Pokuase Interchange, the largest in West Africa, and the Tamale Interchange, the first in Northern Ghana, as examples of this vision.
“This remarkable project also highlights our partnership with Japan, funded through Japan’s largest grant of its kind to Ghana, extended to Ghana by Japan. This general support from the government of the people of Japan is facilitated by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). [This] Reflects a strong bond, friendship, and mutual respect between our two nations.”

Acknowledging the efforts of engineers, contractors, and workers who brought the project to fruition, the President lauded their dedication and skill. He emphasized; “Your efforts remind us of the ingenuity and resilience that define us as Ghanaians.”
He emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving national development goals.
President Akufo-Addo called on Ghanaians to recognize that nation-building is a shared responsibility. He reiterated;
“While we have achieved much, the journey ahead requires collective effort and continuity. It is in this spirit that I personally urge you to support the leadership of Alhaji, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh in the upcoming elections. Their determination, vision, and experience will ensure the continuation of transformative projects that [would] drive Ghana’s development and prosperity.”

The President’s appeal underscored the importance of leadership in driving transformative projects that enhance Ghana’s development.
The President concluded his address by urging motorists to prioritize safety and proper usage of the new interchange to ensure its longevity. He ended;
‘May this infrastructure serve us in fostering growth, connectivity, and unity for generations to come. May God bless us all and our homeland, Ghana, and make her great and strong. I thank you for your attention.”
