As NPP NEC Decides On Running Mate: Key Considerations

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) national executive committee and national council are set to convene today to discuss the selection of a running mate for the party’s flagbearer, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The focus of this deliberation is to identify the most suitable candidate to partner with Dr. Bawumia for a successful outcome in the 2024 elections.

Several names have emerged as potential contenders for this crucial role, including Dr. Martin Opoku Prempeh, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyepong.

Reflecting on Dr. Bawumia’s own selection for a similar role in 2008, it noteworthy that, at that time, he was primarily recognized as a technocrat, strategically chosen to inject confidence and expertise to the ticket, according to insider information.

In the current political dispensation, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia finds himself in a position where political associations are crucial, and he might need a revamped version of himself to navigate the upcoming electoral season. From 2008 to 2016, Dr. Bawumia held a political stature that portrayed him as an economic ‘wizard’, capable of addressing almost all Ghana’s economic challenges. Through compelling lectures, he presented his vision for the country’s economic transformation under his boss’ leadership.

However, as the credibility of the vice president has diminished over time, earning his electoral favor seems challenging. Dr. Bawumia is now battling with a lack of trust from the Ghanaian people, irrespective of the NPP’s attempts to convince otherwise. Even substantial efforts in infrastructure development and economic stabilization under the Nana Akufo-Addo-led administration may not significantly alter this perception. Consequently, the only remaining opportunity is to pair the flagbearer with a running mate who inspires confidence, emulating what the Vice President did in his earlier role.

Also, the NPP cannot overlook the importance of the Ashanti Region, especially considering the sentiments of the Ashantis who currently feel marginalized by the Danqauh faction within the party. A sincere gesture to appease Manhyia is crucial, hoping that the people of Asante will rally behind the party in full force. Historical data indicates that low voter turnout in strongholds has played a pivotal role in the outcomes of previous elections. Hence, Ashanti Region remains very crucial grounds for Breaking the Eight.

The 2024 general elections mark a unique chapter in the country’s political history, pitting a former president in opposition against an eight-year incumbent Vice President, both from the north. Although both candidates carry their share of challenges, recent events work against the incumbent Vice President. To overcome this challenging yet natural circumstance, the NPP requires an adept communicator.

This individual must not only highlight the past shortcomings under the former president, considering that similar accusations will be directed at the NPP, but also present a captivating vision that rivals initiatives like 1D1F, 1V1D, 1D1M, and the recent 24-Hour Economy policy, offering an irresistible appeal to the electorate.

Votes serve as both a reflection of past performance and a projection of future possibilities. Armed with a credible figure, the NPP can strategically position this individual—whether a man or woman—alongside Dr. Bawumia, presenting a compelling vision for an exciting future.

In the pursuit of capturing political power and breaking the eight-year cycle, embracing a populist running mate could prove beneficial. This charismatic figure’s role would involve stirring sentiments, amplifying concerns, and consolidating support in key bases and strongholds. A maverick, red-light politician possesses the ability to work wonders for the NPP ticket, especially when pitted against the NDC’s well-regarded communicator, John Dramani Mahama.

The party must, however, be mindful that this chosen figure may harbor aspirations for the presidency, warranting careful consideration. Balancing the advantages of having a maverick against the challenges of managing such a dynamic personality demands thoughtful deliberation, even if there’s just a hint of possibility.

Especially considering that if the party is entrusted to the maverick, his or her principles and goals will inevitably be molded by the character and personality of this individual. Currently, this stands as the most significant intrigue in Ghana’s political landscape: who will replicate for Dr. Bawumia the role he played for his mentor, Nana Addo?
