Ashanti Region Voters Decide: Majority Commit To Candidate, 5% Opt Out

Security has been heightened for the Akwatia by-election

Elections In Ghana

Mussa Dankwah revealed that a recent poll conducted in the Ashanti region indicates that the majority of voters have already decided on their preferred candidate for the upcoming December 7th election, while a small percentage (5%) have opted not to participate in the voting process.

Dankwah, the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, observed that the July 2024 poll reveals varying patterns of voter abstention across different regional blocs, with distinct distributions of individuals who intend to refrain from voting.

He pointed out that the NPP’s core support base will witness an unparalleled level of electoral indifference, a phenomenon not previously observed in the 4th Republic.

“Turnout will be significantly higher among NDC voters than recorded in any election in the 4th Republic and significantly lower for the NPP, especially in the Ashanti, Greater Accra, Eastern and Western regions”.

“You have been told here in advance before it happens. This is no secret, we published this data early in July 2024”.

Mussa Dankwah

Dankwah further noted that the poll revealed a striking trend in voter apathy, with a significant proportion of voters in Akan-dominated regions opting out of the electoral process.

He indicated that a staggering 71% of voters who have decided not to vote hail from these regions, which have traditionally been a stronghold of the NPP.

The pollster observed that this phenomenon raises important questions about the underlying factors driving voter disengagement in these areas.

As such, the NPP’s electoral fortunes may be significantly impacted by the notable absence of Akan-dominated region voters, a crucial constituency, from the polls, potentially altering the election’s outcome.

Dankwah also indicated that the polls revealed a notable trend in Greater Accra, where 19% of voters have opted out of the electoral process.

This phenomenon, according to him, is particularly striking in the NPP’s strongholds within the region, where one would expect a higher level of engagement.

This indicates that the NPP’s traditional support base is eroding and that the party needs to re-examine its strategy to win back the trust of its core constituents.

High Voter Turnout Expected In Volta, Oti, And Northern Regions

Furthermore, Mussa Dankwah noted that contrary to expectations, the Volta, Oti, and five Northern regions are expected to witness high voter turnout, with empirical data pointing to a significant absence of apathy in these regions.

Dankwah stated that a significant 70% of Alan Kyerematen’s former supporters in the Ashanti region, who changed their minds in July, have now thrown their weight behind John Mahama.

“47% of voters in the Kwesimintsim constituency in the Western Region will not vote in the December 2024 elections. 25% of voters in the Effia constituency in the Western Region will not vote in the December 2024 elections”.

Mussa Dankwah

In a concerning trend, Dankwah revealed that a significant proportion of voters in the Essikado-Ketan constituency in the Western Region have opted out of the electoral process.

A staggering 27% of voters in this constituency have indicated that they will not participate in the December 2024 elections.

According to Dankwah, the poll also revealed a notable 16% of eligible voters in the Sekondi constituency of the Western Region have opted out of the electoral process.

He noted that this suggests that, barring a change of heart or unforeseen circumstances, these voters will abstain from casting their ballots in the December 2024 elections.

Dankwah revealed that a small but significant proportion of voters in the Takoradi constituency of the Western Region have opted out of the electoral process.

According to his findings, 8% of voters in this constituency have indicated that they will not participate in the December 2024 elections.

Thus, Dankwah stated that political parties must take heed of this trend and work to re-engage these voters, addressing their concerns and restoring their faith in the democratic process.
