Assin North Constituency: President Was Making Comments Based On The Law- Stephen Ntim

Stephen Ntim, the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has backed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo after his remark about James Gyakye Quayson, the ousted member of parliament for Assin North.

According to Mr. Ntim, the President’s statements were based on his legal understanding.

“Per Mr Akufo-Addo’s legal experience, he is at liberty to predict the possible outcome of a criminal trial. I am not a lawyer but in law if you kill a human being as another example, why will you not go to jail? So maybe the president was making the comment based on what he knows about the law, not that he is going to be the judge. From his experience, he is at liberty to predict what is likely to happen.”

Mr. Ntim’s remarks are timely as former President John Dramani Mahama, criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for making remarks that he believes are detrimental to the pending criminal prosecution involving Gyakye Quayson.

President Akufo-Addo implied that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate in the upcoming by-elections on Tuesday, is a candidate for prison on Sunday, June 25, when he spoke at the Church of Pentecost in Assin Akonfudi in the Assin North Constituency of the Central Region.

Akufo-Addo’s remarks drew a harsh response from John Dramani Mahama, who claimed they violated Ghana’s democracy and the principles of the 1992 Constitution. He asserted that the NDC maintains by its claim that the Supreme Court’s decision to have the name of its 2020 parliamentary candidate removed from Parliament following a convincing victory over the incumbent, was wrong.

Executives Of NDC And NPP Convene With IGP

Ahead to the by-election in Assin North, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, met with executives from the two main political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The gathering, which took place at the Assin State College SHS, aimed to foster communication, comprehension, and collaboration between the police force and the political parties.

The IGP tried to address any difficulties or worries brought up by the NDC and NPP executives in order to guarantee a peaceful and orderly election process.

Both parties got the chance to share their perspectives, outline their expectations, and talk about important issues throughout the meeting. The discussions included a range of subjects, including security measures, preventing electoral fraud, and the function of law enforcement in ensuring an environment that is favorable for fair elections.

Moreover, the IGP highlighted that the electoral process must be fair, neutral, and transparent. He informed the NDC and NPP officials that the police force would uphold the law and defend everyone’s rights throughout the by-election.

The gathering gave the executives of the NDC and NPP a chance to promote harmony and understanding. They agreed that it was crucial to live in harmony and cooperate for Assin North’s improvement.

As agreed upon, the IGP and the political party executives underlined their confidence in a successful by-election following the good conversations.

On Tuesday, June 27, the Electoral Commission is scheduled to hold a by-election in the Assin North. The court’s decision to void James Gyakye Quayson’s election and order the removal of his name from the parliamentary records necessitated the by-election.
