U/E Minister Avers Bawku Would’ve Been Worse Off If REGSEC Hadn’t Been Proactive

Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu

The Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, has implied that Bawku would have been worse off if the Regional Security Coordinating Council (REGSEC) had not been proactive on rising security issues in the area.

Speaking on the recent security threats in the Northern Belt, Stephen Yakubu averred the Security Council is working hard to ensure that security is strong and residents are safe.

The Regional Minister suggested that working very hard also mean that the citizens will have to obey the rules and regulations and the laws of the country.

“Bawku would have probably been in flames by now, in much more trouble and more problems if we had not been very proactive.”

Stephen Yakubu

According to the Regional Minister, REGSEC will enforce all laws on anyone that is found going contrary to the laws of the land.

Responding to claims that he is just enforcing reactionary measures in Bawku following Sunday, January 23, 2022 shooting, Stephen Yakubu asserted that, that was not the case.

“And the people who know Bawku and its problems in the past know that we have been very proactive in dealing with this matter. What is true is that we are very serious and working very hard.”

Stephen Yakubu

The Regional Minister therefore entreated all the residents of Bawku to provide the Security Council with information because the people who committed these crimes are living within the communities. He further called on residents to assist security officers to maintain peace in the area.

Stephen Yakubu’s comments come days after the shooting incident in the area which left three persons including a Police Officer dead and others injured.

The Security Council subsequently banned the use of motorbikes in the town. This action has been criticized by some security analyst who want the government to rather address the root cause of the problem.

Ensuring Security

Meanwhile, Member of the Interior and Defence Committee of Parliament, Kofi Adams, has indicated that any money that has to be rightly spent to ensure security in the country must be spent.

“Security is such that you don’t see its importance until the opposite happens.”

Kofi Adams

According to him, Ghana has already spent so much in securing the Northern Belt of the country.

“Quite a lot has gone on and so the military have had to establish some SODs that helps to secure our borders and to secure us as a country and even sometimes to help the Burkinabe’s.”

Kofi Adams

Kofi Adams speaking on security in the country and that of Burkina Faso, he averred Ghana has had some excellent relationships with some exchanges where the nation has helped in arresting some persons on “our side and they have also arrested persons from their side. We keep sharing intelligence”.

“A lot has actually gone into security. It costs us good money that could have gone into other areas.”

Kofi Adams

Many have called on government to help maintain peace considering the ongoing disturbances in Burkina Faso. worse
