The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has voiced grave concern over the outbreak of violence and unrest that has followed the 2024 general elections.
In a strongly worded statement, the Bishops’ Conference unequivocally condemned the acts of violence, rioting, and looting that have shattered the peace and disrupted social order in parts of the country.
They emphasized that such actions not only threaten the nation’s stability but also undermine its democratic values.
“This wave of unrest has led to the loss of lives, destruction of property, and deepened divisions among our citizens. Such actions are unacceptable and go against the core values of peace, unity, and respect for life that we, as a nation, hold dear.
“We call for an immediate cessation of all violent activities and urge all Ghanaians to uphold the peace that has been a hallmark of our democratic processes”.

The Ghana Catholic Bishops emphasized that resorting to violence, intimidation, and destruction as a means of expressing political dissent is deeply detrimental to the nation.
They noted that such actions erode the core principles of democracy, which rely on peaceful dialogue and respect for differing views.
Furthermore, they warned that this destructive path threatens the stability of society, disproportionately harming vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the economically disadvantaged.

The Bishops called for a renewed commitment to non-violent engagement, urging citizens to prioritize peace, justice, and the collective good of the nation. “We particularly call on all political party leaders to exercise responsible leadership at this critical time”.
They emphasized the urgent need for political leaders to take a firm stand against violence, and openly condemn any unlawful actions by their supporters.
The Bishop advised political leaders to actively leverage their influence to restore calm, foster peace, and promote unwavering respect for the rule of law across all communities.

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference further emphasized that the role of political leaders extends beyond the pursuit of power, noting that it entails providing wise guidance to their supporters, fostering peace, and prioritizing the well-being of all Ghanaians.
The Conference also called on the Ghana Police and other security agencies to maintain heightened vigilance and uphold the highest standards of professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

“We further urge them to deal more decisively with all those involved in the mayhem, treating them as the criminals that they are, regardless of their party affiliations, in the effort to maintain peace and order, while acting swiftly and fairly to protect citizens and property.
“May God bless Ghana with peace, harmony, and healing in the aftermath of these turbulent events”.
