The Central Region branch of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vehemently condemned what it described as disparaging remarks and personal attacks launched by the Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo Markin against the party’s running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang.
The party, in a statement issued by its Central Regional Communications Officer, Gabriella Tetteh, strongly asserted that such attacks are unwarranted and reflect the New Patriotic Party’s agitation and bewilderment over the National Democratic Congress’s choice for the Vice-Presidential candidate in the upcoming elections.
Expressing deep disappointment about the Effutu Member of Parliament’s remarks, the National Democratic Congress Communications Officer in the Central Region condemned the comments, stating that the Effutu Lawmaker deviated from addressing the government’s performance than launching personal attacks on Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang.
Ms. Gabriella Tetteh further stated that as Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang hails from the Central Region, the National Democratic Congress expected the Members of Parliament in the region to recognize her nomination as an honor and acknowledge the region’s contribution to Ghana’s political leadership.
She also emphasized that Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s unwavering commitment to serving all citizens of Ghana, especially women and children, is a testament to her dedication and integrity.

Furthermore, the National Democratic Congress in the Central Region highlighted Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s illustrious career as a public servant, spanning roles such as a teacher, English literature lecturer, Vice Chancellor, Chancellor, Minister for Education, and UNESCO Adviser.
Notably, Gabriella Tetteh, the Regional Communications Officer of the opposition party noted that during Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeamng’s tenure as Vice Chancellor, the University of Cape Coast witnessed significant growth and development, including the expansion of disciplines and faculties, infrastructural developments, and approval from the National Accreditation Board for reopening departments.
She also asserted that as Minister for Education, the National Democratic Congress running mate spearheaded various government interventions that were aimed at supporting deprived students, improving educational resources, and implementing initiatives specifically targeting the girl child, such as providing free sanitary towels and support for pregnant students.
Ms Gabriella Tetteh further emphasized that Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s dedication and contributions to the educational sector underscore her commitment to national development.

According to the party in the Central Region, the nomination of Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang as the running mate symbolizes the party’s dedication to fostering gender balance and equality in Ghana’s political landscape.
She further criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party’s failure to fulfill promises regarding gender equality, particularly citing the unfulfilled Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Bill and the lack of female representation in Dr. Bawumia’s 2024 campaign team.
In addition, Gabriella Tetteh, the Regional Communications Officer of the opposition party denounced what she described as the governing New Patriotic Party’s hypocritical stance on female appointments in government and highlighted concerns regarding the exclusion of women from higher leadership roles within the current administration and the party as well.
