The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey has slammed Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, describing his recent comments about “upgrading” Ghana as both out of touch and disconnected from the harsh realities facing Ghanaians.
The National Democratic Congress chief scribe, in a scathing critique, expressed his astonishment at Dr Bawumia’s statements, calling them a gross misrepresentation of the country’s current economic challenges.
Mr Kwetey sharply criticized Dr Bawumia’s economic management, suggesting that the Vice President’s notion of an upgrade fails to address the fundamental issues plaguing the country.
“It is astonishing to hear Dr Bawumia, the ‘Economic Wizkid’ Ghana never got, talk about ‘upgrading’ Ghana as if that’s what is needed. What does he really intend to upgrade? Will he upgrade the unbearable hardships or the monumental levels of corruption under his watch?”.
Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, NDC General Secretary
Mr Kwetey expressed deep concerns over what he described as the widespread suffering and pervasive corruption that has marked the tenure of the current New Patriotic Party administration led by President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Highlighting the stark realities faced by ordinary Ghanaians, the National Democratic Congress General Secretary posed a series of rhetorical questions aimed at illustrating the disconnect between Dr Bawumia’s comments and the lived experiences of the populace.
He questioned whether the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer intend to upgrade the millions of Ghanaians his government has pushed into extreme poverty or the “crushing import duties”.
“Perhaps he plans to upgrade the exorbitant internet costs that youth can’t afford or the skyrocketing prices of food and basic commodities”, Mr Kwetey continued, underscoring the economic difficulties that many Ghanaians endure daily.
The former Member of Parliament for Ketu South Constituency also expressed grave concerns over the high cost of living, chastising the ruling party over the rising expenses that have become a burden for households across the country.
He asked whether the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia intends to upgrade the excruciating electricity and water bills or the relentless rise in fuel prices affecting all Ghanaians.
Mr Kwetey, in addition, criticized the Vice President over the ever-depreciating cedi, the soaring inflation, the crippling interest rates, and the astronomical rent costs in the country, accusing Dr Bawumia of failure to alleviate these financial pressures.
Ghana in the Wrong Direction
The NDC General Secretary did not stop there; he accused the ruling administration of steering the country in the wrong direction, asserting that the current leadership has proven itself to be incapable of effectively managing the country’s affairs.
“Every patriotic citizen knows that Ghana is headed in the wrong direction under this inept administration”, Mr Kwetey declared, calling for a significant change in leadership as the only solution to the country’s woes.
In his remarks, Mr Kwetey made a strong case for former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress flagbearer for the 2024 general elections, positioning him as the leader Ghana needs to restore hope and rebuild the nation.
“The only way out is to vote for H.E President Mahama—the most trustworthy, honest, visionary, and experienced leader who will reset Ghana back onto the path of Jobs, Accountability, and Progress”.
Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, NDC General Secretary
He emphasized that former President John Dramani Mahama’s return to power is the only means to restore economic stability and integrity to the country.
Mr Kwetey’s comments come at a critical time as Ghana approaches the 2024 general elections. The NDC has been intensifying its critique of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly focusing on economic mismanagement and corruption allegations.
