Fix The Country: We are not in normal times, our expectations should be measured

Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Opoku-Ansah

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Mpraeso, Davis Opoku-Ansah, has urged the public to measure their expectation of how issues should be tackled in the country since “we are not in normal times.”

He intimated that, although the call by citizens demanding some issues in the country to be resolved is good,;the halt in some economic activities is impeding economic activities. This, he explained, does not allow money to come in to boost the economy to tackle these issues.

“COVID-19 has put a lot of restrictions on how we do our stuff. People are not paying taxes. People have also not been able to go for their goods due to the border closure and this is impeding economic activities. So, we are not in normal times and our expectations should be measured.”

His comments come on the back of a social media campaign dubbed “#FixTheCountry”, which has seen citizens demanding the government to fix issues such as sanitation, taxes, unemployment, galamsey and power outages amongst others.

Some social media messages

Mr. Opoku Ansah intimated that the happenings are not the doing of government. He averred that the nation is lucky to have a President and an economic management team;who are able to manage the situation the country is facing unlike other countries.

“But we will get there and will certainly get over this barrier. We need to look at the situation we find ourselves in and based on that you put that pressure on government. We don’t expect the government to be fixing the major challenges when money is not coming in; It becomes a bit of a challenge.”

The social media call is a good one

He lauded the social media call saying that it is a good call which will provide government the opportunity to engage the stakeholders involved.

“So, I welcome this idea, I have always said that creating such room for people to express themselves is quite essential and needed in our system and that is why we enjoy that relative peace.

“For me, I think it is a good exercise for somebody who has championed accountability;and has created a lot of room for a lot of people to express themselves. I think social media provides us that platform and it is good that Ghanaians are able to express themselves.”

Davis Opoku-Ansah

The Mpraeso MP further urged citizens to also be responsible since the responsibility is not only on government. He averred that solving these issues requires joint effort and as such whiles government is doing their best to fix the situation, citizens must also be responsible in areas where they can handle.

However, he called on the various social media celebrities to also go a step further;to look into issues in the country and based on that hold government accountable.

“I also expect them to have a look at the 2021 budget that was read and how a chunk of budget is going into paying compensations and servicing debts and all of that.”
