Ghana Police arrest armed robbery suspects

Ghana Police

In a recent crackdown on illicit drug activities, the Ghana Police Service (GPS) has arrested a 30-year-old trader in Sabon Zongo, Accra, for the possession of dangerous drugs and an unlicensed firearm.

The suspect, identified as Amidu Mohammed, was apprehended by officers from the Greater Accra Regional Police Command following a tip-off from the community.

The police said the arrest was part of a targeted operation aimed at clamping down on the illegal distribution of prescription-only drugs in the area.

“Upon information received by the Accra Regional Intelligence Team, the suspect, a shop operator at Sabon Zongo, was identified for allegedly possessing and distributing quantities of suspected dangerous drugs.”

It further noted that the suspect admitted during an initial police interaction that he was in possession of some drugs and had earlier sold a portion to another individual in the area.

A police team was immediately dispatched to the scene, where Mohammed was located and arrested without resistance.

A subsequent search of his premises uncovered significant quantities of restricted pharmaceuticals.

“…Including Tramico 225, Tramaking 225, and Tafrodol 225—popularly known in the area as ‘RED’ or ‘Wo Nim Red?’ as well as Diazepam 10 (commonly referred to as Blue-Blue or Valium 10).”

In addition to the drugs, police recovered a pump-action firearm hidden inside a sack within the shop.

The suspect reportedly told investigators that the weapon did not belong to him and had been left in his shop by an unknown individual. He was, however, unable to provide any further details to support this claim.

Accordingly, the Ghana Police have charged Mohammed with two counts: Possession of Dangerous Drugs, contrary to Section 38 of the Pharmacy Act, 1994 (Act 489), and Possession of a Firearm Without Lawful Authority, under Section 192 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

The accused has since appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court, where he will face trial. “The Greater Accra Regional Police Command commends the vigilance and cooperation of community members,” the statement read.

The Service emphasized the importance of community involvement in combating crime and urged the public to continue supplying credible intelligence to support law enforcement efforts.

“The Police continue to urge the public to provide credible information to support ongoing efforts to fight crime. The Command assures the public, especially informants, of utmost safety and confidentiality in all engagements.”

This incident highlights the growing concern over the abuse and distribution of restricted drugs within urban communities.

Substances such as “RED” and “Blue-Blue” have gained notoriety for their misuse, especially among youth and low-income populations seeking cheap highs. The street names reflect how deeply embedded the drugs have become in local culture.

Ghana Police Maintains Monitoring

Law enforcement agencies continue to monitor high-risk neighborhoods where illegal drug trade has flourished. Officials say arrests like Mohammed’s are vital in curbing the circulation of harmful substances and protecting public health and safety.

Meanwhile, authorities are investigating the origins of the recovered firearm and whether it may be linked to other criminal activities in the area. Police say further charges could be filed if new evidence emerges.

Security analysts argue that while the arrest marks progress, more sustained efforts are needed, including collaboration between community leaders, health officials, and the police to tackle the root causes of drug abuse and illegal arms possession.

The Ghana Police Service reiterated its call for continued vigilance and civic cooperation, urging members of the public to remain alert and proactive in reporting suspicious activities.

According to the Service, public involvement is a critical component in the fight against crime, especially in urban communities where illicit drug operations often thrive unnoticed. “Together, we can make our communities safer and more secure.”
