The Ambassador of Morocco to Ghana, H.E. Imane Ouaadil, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Accra to reaffirm diplomatic ties between both countries.

The meeting underscored the strong diplomatic relations between Ghana and Morocco while providing a platform to explore new opportunities for enhanced cooperation in key areas of mutual interest.

During the meeting, Ambassador Ouaadil emphasized the longstanding tradition of mutual support between Ghana and Morocco.

“She expressed Morocco’s appreciation for Ghana’s participation in the Atlantic Countries Initiative and sought Ghana’s support in Morocco’s bid for re-election to the Security Council of the African Union”

The Ambassador reiterated Morocco’s appreciation for Ghana’s consistent engagement on regional and international issues, particularly its active participation in the Atlantic Countries Initiative.

According to her, Morocco’s continued presence on the Security Council would strengthen African representation in global governance and reinforce collective efforts toward addressing continental security challenges.

Regional Cooperation and Security

The conversation also delved into the situation in the Sahel, with Ambassador Ouaadil stressing the urgent need to reintegrate Sahelian states into the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

She highlighted Morocco’s commitment to regional stability and emphasized the critical role of ECOWAS in addressing security and economic concerns across West Africa.

“The reintegration of Sahelian states into ECOWAS is not just a diplomatic necessity; it is a strategic move to enhance stability, security, and economic resilience in the region,” she stated, underscoring Morocco’s readiness to support efforts toward this goal.

Hon. Ablakwa acknowledged the importance of addressing instability in the Sahel and expressed Ghana’s commitment to working with Morocco and other stakeholders to find sustainable solutions.

Expanding Educational Partnerships

Education and academic exchange formed another key part of the discussions. Ambassador Ouaadil announced a significant expansion of Moroccan scholarships for Ghanaian students, increasing the annual slots from 90 to 180.

This move, she explained, was aimed at deepening the educational and cultural ties between the two countries while providing Ghanaian students with broader opportunities for higher education in Morocco.

Hon. Ablakwa welcomed the initiative, noting that Morocco’s academic support plays a crucial role in enhancing human capital development in Ghana.

He emphasized the importance of ensuring that these educational opportunities align with Ghana’s development priorities, particularly in fields such as science, technology, and agriculture.

Boosting Trade and Economic Cooperation

Economic collaboration featured prominently in the discussions, with both parties agreeing on the need to enhance trade and investment between Ghana and Morocco.

“Hon. Ablakwa indicated that Morocco could offer technical support in executing Ghana’s agribusiness programme, particularly in fertilizer and seedling production, since it had a comparative advantage in that area”

Ambassador Ouaadil acknowledged the potential for deeper economic collaboration and expressed Morocco’s willingness to provide technical support and expertise to Ghana’s agribusiness initiatives.

She reiterated Morocco’s interest in strengthening trade ties and exploring new investment opportunities that would benefit both economies.

Reactivating Bilateral Commissions

The meeting also addressed “the reactivation of the Ghana-Morocco Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC), which last convened in 2018.”

Both officials emphasized the importance of reviving this platform to facilitate bilateral agreements and address emerging economic and political priorities.

Hon. Ablakwa stressed that the PJCC remains a crucial mechanism for driving Ghana-Morocco cooperation, particularly in trade, education, and regional security.

He expressed optimism that its reactivation would provide the necessary framework for advancing key initiatives and ensuring the full implementation of agreements between the two countries.

Strengthening Diplomatic Ties

In concluding the meeting, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to deepening diplomatic and economic relations.

They agreed on the need for continuous engagement at the highest levels to foster vibrant trade partnerships and advance mutual interests on regional and international platforms.

Hon. Ablakwa emphasized that Ghana remains committed to working closely with Morocco to strengthen bilateral cooperation and address shared challenges.

He highlighted the importance of sustained diplomatic dialogue in achieving common goals and promoting regional stability.

Ambassador Ouaadil echoed similar sentiments, noting that Morocco views Ghana as a strategic partner in Africa.

She expressed confidence that the growing collaboration between the two nations would lead to greater economic prosperity and enhanced diplomatic relations in the years ahead.

The visit reaffirmed the strong ties between Ghana and Morocco and set the stage for deeper cooperation across multiple sectors.
