President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association, Dr. Joseph Obeng, has extended their condolence to the family of the late former President, Jerry John Rawlings.
Touting some achievement under his leadership which was relevant to the business enclave during his stead as the president, his death according to the Association is a big blow to the trading community.
“On behalf of the trading community of Ghana, I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of the former president of the republic of Ghana. It saddens our heart to lose such a great leader. He was a people-centered leader who protected the vulnerable and trading community. We will always remember this great leader”.
Being the largest national trade union established under the regime of the late former President, Jerry John Rawlings, Dr. Obeng noted that his government then worked tirelessly in pushing the agenda of Ghanaian Traders.
“Since its inception in 1989 GUTA has had to work with the government at that time headed by H.E JJ Rawlings till the country went back to multi-Party Democracy. Being the Head of State for the country after 1992 elections, GUTA continued to work with President Rawlings and the government of the day as always pushing the agenda of Ghanaian Traders. After leaving office, GUTA followed the exploits of the former President in his new role as a Statesman”.
Meanwhile, the former Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier-General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah (Rtd) has intimated that the death of Rawlings should enjoin the nation towards a peaceful election.
Speaking in an interview, he cautioned political parties to be guided by the legacy of former president Rawlings going into the December polls.
“His death should propel us for more peaceful elections that is why Rawlings came to the scene to make Ghana a peaceful and more prosperous country.
“As we vote next month to elect a president we should be gathered by the principle of peace and tranquility which Rawlings displayed during his tenure”.
Eulogizing the late former president, Mr. Nunoo-Mensah described him as a selfless leader who lived and died for his country.
His comments follow the demise of former President, whose tragic death occurred on Thursday, November 12 at 10 am.
The Chief of Staff, Frema Osei Opare and the Rawlings’ family are yet to decide on a date for his state burial.
However, President Nana Akufo-Addo together along with his Vice, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia have both signed the book of condolence opened for the family of the late Jerry John Rawlings.
The President and his Vice signed the book when they visited the family of the late Jerry John Rawlings to commiserate with them.
Contained in his tribute, President Akufo-Addo noted that Rawlings had played an integral role in the country’s affairs which is “exceptional”.
“Your role in the establishment and development of the 4th Republic as the most enduring Republic of our history is truly exceptional. Ghanaians appreciate your leadership of our nation and will remember you accordingly. For me, I appreciate your friendship very much. Commandant, farewell and rest peacefully in the bosom of the Almighty.”
