Probe Into Thompson’s Visit to Afenyo-Markin Demanded

British High Commissioner Harriet Thompson Visits Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin

The British High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Harriet Thompson’s diplomatic visit to Minority Leader Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin is now at the heart of a petition demanding an urgent investigation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The petitioner, Simon Yaw Awadzi, has formally appealed to the Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to open a full inquiry into the circumstances and implications of the visit.

The petition pointed out that although it’s common for diplomats to meet with political leaders, this specific encounter is drawing scrutiny due to its unconventional location—Akosua Villa, the private home of the Minority Leader, rather than an official setting like Parliament.

“In what capacity did the Minority Leader receive the British High Commissioner at his private residence? If the visit was related to his position as the Minority Leader, it would have been expected to take place in Parliament, a formal venue designated for such meetings.”

Simon Yaw Awadzi

The location alone has sparked speculation over the motives and content of the meeting.

Awadzi contended that such a meeting, conducted behind closed doors and far from the public eye, risks undermining transparency and could even infringe on Ghana’s political independence.

Awadzi’s concerns go beyond the optics of the setting. The petition delved into broader geopolitical dynamics, especially in the context of West Africa’s volatile political climate.

With neighboring Burkina Faso grappling with insurgency and Côte d’Ivoire adopting a firm diplomatic stance, the fear is that seemingly benign diplomatic engagements could carry unintended consequences for Ghana’s sovereignty.

Adding to the unease is the connection between Afenyo-Markin and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. “Given this close relationship, any stance taken by Hon. Afenyo-Markin is likely to reflect the position of the former President,” the petition reads.

This statement feeds into a growing narrative that the visit may not have been an isolated engagement but rather part of a wider diplomatic strategy.

If true, the implications for Ghana’s diplomatic posture and internal political dynamics could be significant.

Motives Behind Diplomatic Visit Questioned

Accordingly, Simon Yaw Awadzi called for a thorough investigation—not just to determine the purpose of the visit, but also to assess whether it constituted an official diplomatic engagement or a potentially destabilizing political move.

He underscored the need to examine the wider ramifications for the national interest and Ghana sovereignty, especially if the meeting served as a conduit for foreign interference in the country’s internal politics.

“Key concerns include: The purpose of the visit and issues discussed; Whether the visit was an official diplomatic engagement; Potential implications for Ghana’s sovereignty and interests; The capacity in which the Minority Leader received the High Commissioner at his residence; The potential reflection of former President Akufo-Addo’s stance and its implications.”

Ghana’s political landscape has previously grappled with the challenge of maintaining a careful balance between diplomatic protocol and political impartiality.

Yet, with rising political polarization and growing instability across the region, the potential consequences now carry greater weight.

In light of this, Awadzi pressed the government to treat the matter with seriousness, urging the Foreign Affairs Ministry and national security agencies to maintain heightened vigilance.

He urged these institutions to closely monitor the activities and interactions of opposition figures, “particularly in their interactions with foreign diplomats.”

The petition ended with a stark warning: Ghana must tread carefully when it comes to foreign interactions, especially those that bypass institutional channels.

The tone is clear—diplomatic niceties must never come at the expense of national security.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not released any public statement addressing or acknowledging the petition.

As Ghana strives to strengthen its leadership role in West Africa, safeguard internal political stability, and uphold strong international relations, it becomes essential to address incidents like this promptly to prevent them from escalating and triggering further unrest.
