Hon. James Gyakye Quayson - Assin North MP

Following a grueling three-year legal battle, Assin North Member of Parliament (MP) Hon. James Gyakye Quayson has emerged victorious, asserting that his acquittal is not just a personal triumph but a victory for his constituents and the nation as a whole.

The court’s decision to clear him of charges related to perjury, deceit of public officer, and falsification of documents comes after a drawn-out legal battle that cast a shadow over his political career.

Hon. Quayson, however, believes that his exoneration is a testament to the strength of the legal system, one that, in his view, has ultimately worked in his favor.

“It is almost expected because you see, when a man is innocent, no matter what you do, it will be pronounced at some point,” Quayson said, reflecting on the verdict.

His words, tinged with both relief and vindication, reveal the deep personal significance of the acquittal not just for him but for the broader political landscape.

As Quayson continues to bask in the glow of victory, he took time to praise the integrity of Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh, the judge who presided over his case.

“I am very proud of our Lady Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh. I was going to tell her in the courtroom, but the rules don’t allow that. She is a very decent human being; more blessings for her.”

While expressing gratitude for the judge’s fair handling of the case, Quayson was not shy about his belief that the entire process was politically motivated.

He claimed that the case against him had little to do with justice and everything to do with politics. According to him, the prosecution relied on “falsified documents just to get a conviction.”

Despite the strong political undertones of the case, Quayson insisted that his faith in the judicial process remained steadfast.

He even drew a clear distinction between prosecution and persecution, suggesting that his treatment had been unfair and biased.

“They were trying to prosecute me, but this is a court of law. There is a difference between prosecution and persecution.”

A Political Case With Serious Consequences

Hon. James Gyakye Quayson’s legal battle stemmed from accusations that he had entered parliament while holding dual citizenship, a violation of the constitutional requirement that candidates denounce any foreign nationality before standing for election.

The case raised questions about the integrity of the 2020 elections, where Quayson, after initially being disqualified by the Supreme Court, re-contested and won the Assin North seat in a subsequent election.

For Quayson, the case was not just about fighting for his seat in parliament; it was about defending his honor and protecting his political future.

As he reflected on the past few years, Quayson emphasized the importance of his decision to continue with the trial, despite the opportunity presented by the Attorney General’s office to drop the case.

“My lawyer will put out a statement to address why we declined the offer by the new Attorney General to discontinue the case.

“The timing was wrong, and the state had not finished their cross-examination, and if we accepted that offer, the case could be reopened in the future. We didn’t want to be in that situation.”

Quayson’s decision not to accept the Attorney General’s offer to end the case early was a critical moment in his legal journey.

He believed that, had he agreed to discontinue the case, it would have left the door open for future legal complications that could have continued to haunt him politically.

With this chapter now behind him, Quayson is eager to move forward, focusing once again on his role as MP for Assin North.

His conviction, it seems, has only solidified his commitment to serve his people and continue advocating for his constituents’ needs.

Vindication For Quayson, A Challenge For His Critics

While Quayson’s legal victory is a personal win, it is also a stinging rebuke to those who sought to use the courts as a political tool to remove him from office.

As he continues his work as a Member of Parliament, Quayson’s critics will undoubtedly have to rethink their tactics.

The case serves as a reminder of the complex intersection between politics and law and the dangers of using legal proceedings for partisan gain.

For the people of Assin North, the MP’s acquittal is more than just a political comeback—it is a validation of their choice to re-elect him after his disqualification from parliament.

His legal battle has put him in the national spotlight, and with his victory now official, Quayson’s political career is likely to be closely scrutinized in the years to come.

As he looks ahead, Quayson appears ready to embrace his political destiny with a renewed sense of purpose and determination.

His message is clear: he will continue to fight for his constituents, despite the political forces working against him.
