Gyebi II Dismisses Ban On Mining, Advocates For Responsible Mining Practices

Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II

Ghana’s mining industry is beset by the scourge of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, which poses a significant threat to the social fabric and well-being of communities in affected areas.

While the devastating environmental and social consequences of galamsey necessitate urgent action, a blanket ban on mining has been met with resistance from stakeholders.

Accordingly, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, President of the National House of Chiefs, has dismissed calls for a complete ban on mining activities and advocated for stricter regulations to ensure responsible mining practices

Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II stressed that mining plays a vital role in Ghana’s economy, making a blanket ban impractical and potentially detrimental to the nation’s economic well-being.

As such, he urged the promotion of responsible mining practices, stressing that this is crucial to mitigate the environmental and social impacts of mining in Ghana.

“You all know I am against Galamsey, and I will continue to fight against it, but that should not prevent Ghanaians from engaging in mining activities. Gold is for us, but the right methods should be used to mine it. That is why there is an institution like the Minerals Commission that is responsible for regulating these activities.”

“We are pleading to those calling for the declaration of a state of emergency, and those calling for a ban on mining should know the benefit the nation gets from mining. If we stop mining, most of our youth will be pushed out of jobs”.

Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II further emphasized that Ghana should implement effective measures to regulate illegal mining and encourage responsible mining practices among illegal miners.

He indicated that this approach recognizes that illegal mining, or galamsey, is often driven by socioeconomic necessity, and addressing the root causes of poverty and unemployment is crucial to transforming the sector.

Government Stands Firm Against Galamsey

Lands and Natural Resources Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor stood firm with Nana Gyebi, emphasizing the government’s unwavering commitment to combating illegal mining.

Jinapor noted that the government is standing firm against the destructive forces of illegal mining, despite the formidable challenges posed by selfish interests and powerful cartels.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s precious water bodies, environment, and forest reserves, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.

“Despite these measures, some nation-wreckers motivated by their selfish interests continue to destroy our water bodies and forest reserves. We know that what we are dealing with is money, and the cartels involved will always try to find ways of outwitting us.”

“But we will not relent on our efforts. We welcome the various concerns that have been raised by several groups of people, as well as their recommendations for dealing with this matter.”

The Minister stated that the government is committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure the mining industry contributes significantly to Ghana’s development without harming the environment, particularly water bodies and forests.

He stated that through sustainable mining practices and environmental protection measures, the government aims to strike a balance between economic growth and ecological preservation.

Jinapor revealed that additional infrastructure projects are underway to decentralize the Minerals Commission’s operations, enhancing the regulatory framework and ensuring effective oversight of mining activities across the country.

Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor announced that five new Regional Offices are being built in strategic locations across Ghana, including Kumasi, Tamale, Bolgatanga, Wa, and Bole.

He indicated that additionally, existing District Offices in Wa, Bolgatanga, Prestea, Tarkwa, and Dunkwa are undergoing renovations to support the Minerals Commission’s decentralization efforts and enhance regulatory efficiency.
