Hon. John Peter Amewu

A recent opinion poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics in the Hohoe constituency of the Volta region revealed that incumbent Member of Parliament, Hon. John Peter Amewu, is likely to secure re-election in the 2024 parliamentary polls, holding a strong lead.

The poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics from August 7th to 11th, 2024, revealed that Hon. Peter Amewu is leading the pack with a significant 65% of the vote, while his closest contender, Thomas Worlanyo of the NDC, trails behind with 22%.

The remaining 14% of respondents were divided, with a small fraction (1%) supporting alternative candidates, while 12% remained undecided, and a marginal 1% indicated they would abstain from voting.

“The poll shows that 55% of voters who voted for Margeret Kwaku of the NDC in 2020 elections intend to vote for Peter Amewu while 10% voters who voted for Amewu in 2020 have switched to Thomas Worlanyo”.

“However, in the presidential race, John Mahama leads with 87%, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, 6%, others, 1%, undecided 5% and I will not vote 1%”.

Global InfoAnalytics

According to Global InfoAnalytics, an overwhelming majority of voters (88%) believe Ghana is on the wrong track, while a small minority (5%) think the country is heading in the right direction, and 7% remain neutral or undecided.

This stark assessment highlights widespread discontent among voters in the Hohoe constituency regarding the nation’s current trajectory.

Global InfoAnalytics’ findings further indicate a pervasive sense of economic discontent among voters, with a vast majority expressing dissatisfaction with their financial situation.

The poll revealed a stark contrast in voters’ perceptions of their living standards, with a mere 1% reporting an improvement over the past year, while a significant 49% say their situation has deteriorated, 48% report no change, and 2% remain undecided.

“Considering the fact that more than 90% of the respondents were either NDC or floating voters with NPP representing less than 6%, Amewu’s lead is phenomenal. NDC will have to do something very different to convince voters to abandon Amewu to vote for their candidate”.

“The polls also point to a dissatisfaction within the rank and file of NDC especially among supporters of Prof. Margeret Kweku, the NDC PC in the 2020 elections”

According to Mussa Dankwah, Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, this suggests a notable advantage for the NDC in the region, although a substantial number of voters remain to be swayed.

Mussa Dankwah

According to Dankwah, in the Central region, First-Time Voters overwhelmingly favor John Mahama with 50% support, followed by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at 27%, while Nana Kwame Bediako garnered 20%, others secured 3%, and Alan Kyerematen failed to register a single percentage point.

Dankwah also observed that among Non-First-Time Voters in the Central region, John Mahama’s support surged to 60%, with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia trailing behind at 34%, while Alan Kyerematen and Nana Kwame Bediako garnered minimal support at 2% and 3%, respectively.

He revealed that According to the Central region’s Telephone Tracking Poll for August 2024, which surveyed likely committed voters, John Mahama holds a significant lead with 59% support.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia followed closely with at 33%, while Alan Kyerematen and Nana Kwame Bediako trail behind with 2% and 5% respectively.

Dankwah indicated that these polls enable citizens to express their opinions and preferences, ensuring that their voices are heard and represented by political leaders.

As such, polls play a vital role in democratic societies, serving as a crucial tool for measuring public opinion, informing decision-making, and holding elected officials accountable.

He stated that by gauging citizens’ attitudes, beliefs, and preferences, polls provide valuable insights that shape political campaigns, policy decisions, and media coverage.
