I was taken out of context on “Do or Die” comment- John Mahama

Former President, John Dramani Mahama

Former President, John Dramani Mahama, has stated that he still insists the 2020 elections were not transparent and fair as it is said to have been.

Speaking on the outcome of the elections during his visit to the Central region, he disclosed that there were many anomalies with the whole election process which was evident to the general public.

John Mahama averred that the Supreme court also played a role in the unfair electoral process by refusing to hear them out and follow certain procedures which could have made the verdict a fair one.

“I still insist that the 2020 Election wasn’t clean, transparent and fair. This is because there were lots of things happening. We wouldn’t say we lost the 2020 elections. Looking at the turn of events during that period, we all saw that somethings did not go well during the elections”.

Touching on the election process, he indicated that most of the collations centers had soldiers having guns in their possession forcing electoral officers to declare results. He added that if that had not been the case during the election, the NDC would have had the majority seats in Parliament.

“Many things did not workout out but because we want peace to prevail, we have let go of these happenings. We took it to the Supreme Court for them to pass judgement… As we all know lots of things happened and the final verdict was that the results were accurate despite all the evidence”.

EC should have answered questions

John Mahama also stated the Supreme Court, not allowing the Electoral Commission to answer some important questions, also contributed to the unfair treatment of the NDC. He stated that this is not the first time there has been an election petition in the country and 2016 things were done fairly.

He disclosed that, his main focus now is to concentrate on reforming and organizing the party for the next election.

“In 2012, when I won the election, Akufo-Addo took the issue to court and similarly to ours, they wrote questions for the electoral commission to answer which they did. What I want to say is that, in victory or failure, in good and bad times, we have to give thanks to all who rendered their undying support to the party”.

John Mahama thanks central region

Addressing the people of Central Region through a radio medium, John Mahama said the central region deserves some form of thanksgiving because they contributed immensely to the large numbers the NDC garnered in the past election.

He revealed that, with the Presidential election in 2016, the NDC had 4.7 million votes and in 2020 their votes moved up to 6.3 million. He stated that from the party’s calculations, the central region alone added 118,000 votes. With Parliamentary also, John Mahama stated that in 2016, NDC had 106 seats with four seats only in the central region. But after this the 2020 elections, their seats moved from 4 to 13 seats for the parliamentary side in Parliament.

“So, if you look at the 23 seats in the central region, the NDC has the majority number which is 13. We had more seats in the central Region than any other region. So, it’s really important for us to come here ourselves to express our gratitude to the region”.
