Former President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is going to recruit university graduates and qualified persons who can work out arithmetic properly, to represent the party as agents in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking as part of his campaign to be elected flagbearer for the NDC in the 2024 general elections, he indicated that agents are not going to be selected on the basis of who joined the party first or who has served the longest. However, he explained that it is about who understands numbers and can undertake proper calculations.
“The next point I want to make is about polling agents. Our basis for selecting polling agents should not be who came to the party first. It should be who can do the job for us. The election is not the kind of election it used to be in the past. Today, you need somebody who is educated to sit at the polling station, somebody who can work arithmetic. If you can’t work arithmetic, you are no use to us in the polling station.”

Mr Mahama stated that agents at the various polling stations in the country during elections should be able to look at the figures and make sure that the figures are exactly what was counted in the ballot boxes. He explained that the agents should equally be able to compare the number on the biometric machine and make sure that the number is the same as the number of ballot papers in the ballot box.
“If you are a chairman and you can’t work arithmetic or an executive and you can’t qualify to be a polling agent, you have children who are in university; you have children who are in training colleges, bring them and let us train them and on that day, let them go and sit there for us and do the job so that we can win the election.”

Furthermore, Mr Mahama expressed to delegates that vigilance is key to ensuring victory in the 2024 general elections. He revealed that Ghanaians are waiting for the NDC to come to power.
“We dare not to fail them. NDC will win the 2024 general election. If you are very vigilant, we need 100% vigilance.”

Mr Mahama’s statement followed the launch of his campaign in Ho, Volta Region on Thursday, March 2, 2023, to contest in the internal elections of the largest opposition party.
The 2020 presidential candidate of the NDC during the launch, and among other things, stated that he will strictly enforce prudence and responsibility in the management of public finances by cutting out waste and ostentation, which have become commonplace under the current administration. He noted that together, Ghanaians will build the Ghana “we want” and restore faith in the almost collapsed financial system and embark on sweeping reforms at the Bank of Ghana.
Additionally, the former President stated that Ghana under his government shall actively pursue policies to ensure robust local participation in the banking, financial, telecommunications, mining, agriculture, agribusiness and manufacturing sectors. This, he noted, will be anchored on the party’s plan to grow the economy and create sustainable employment for the youth.
Mr. Mahama, who is contesting the flagbearer slot of the NDC scheduled for May 13 this year, moved straight into campaign mode after launching the campaign.
Constituencies visited include Afadzato South, Hohoe, Kpando, North Dayi and South Dayi. It brings the number of constituencies covered on day one of his “Building the Ghana We want” campaign to eight.
Representatives from three constituencies; Adaklu, Ho West and Ho Central were at the campaign launch at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS).
