Medical Laboratory Professional Workers' Union (MELPWU)

In response to a strike notice issued by the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU), the Ministry of Health has released a statement acknowledging the union’s intentions and outlining the government’s ongoing efforts to resolve the matter.

The Ministry of Health’s Public Relations Officer highlighted that the government has been in extensive negotiations with MELPWU since 2023. These discussions, led by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), have aimed to address the union’s concerns within the framework of both internal and external relativities.

“MELPWU has requested continued negotiations to finalize their proposed Conditions of Service with the Government”

Ministry of Health

The Ministry’s statement revealed that the Government Negotiations Team has already agreed upon the majority of MELPWU’s proposals. However, several key allowances – including Uniform, Special Project, Unsociable, and Communication allowances – are still under various stages of negotiation.

The Ministry emphasized that these discussions are ongoing and that the government is committed to finding a mutually agreeable resolution.

“We appeal to the leadership of MELPWU to reconsider their decision to strike and to return to the negotiation table with the Government Negotiation Teams,” the statement read.

The Ministry underscored that the negotiation team includes representatives from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, and the FWSC, all working collaboratively to address MELPWU’s concerns.

Government Urges Patience Amidst Negotiations

MELPWU

The impending strike by MELPWU is a significant event, given the crucial role that medical laboratory professionals play in the healthcare system. These professionals are responsible for conducting a wide range of diagnostic tests that are essential for patient care. A strike could potentially disrupt healthcare services and delay diagnoses and treatments for patients across the country.

“We appeal to the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers to exercise patience as the Government Negotiation Team, supported by the Ministry, expedites the negotiations to enable MELPWU to call off its strike.”

Ministry of Health

The Ministry expressed its utmost cooperation and respect for MELPWU’s dedication to their members’ welfare and voiced hope that the union would call off the strike in the spirit of cooperation.

The Ministry’s appeal to MELPWU comes at a critical time, as the healthcare sector is already under pressure from various challenges, including managing ongoing public health concerns and ensuring that health services remain accessible to all citizens. The Ministry’s call for continued dialogue reflects a desire to maintain stability within the healthcare system and to ensure that the welfare of both healthcare workers and patients is prioritized.

MELPWU’s demands for improved conditions of service are not new. The union has been advocating for better terms and recognition of the challenging conditions under which its members work.

As the strike date approaches, the Ministry’s appeal to MELPWU to call off the strike and return to the negotiating table is a crucial step towards averting potential disruptions in healthcare services. The Ministry’s statement reflects a balanced approach, recognizing the legitimate concerns of MELPWU while also emphasizing the importance of continued negotiations to achieve a comprehensive and lasting agreement.

The Ministry of Health has acknowledged the strike notice from MELPWU and has provided assurances that negotiations are ongoing. The Ministry has appealed for patience and cooperation from the union and its members, emphasizing the government’s commitment to resolving the outstanding issues. The Ministry’s statement underscores the importance of dialogue and collaboration in addressing the concerns of healthcare workers and maintaining the stability and effectiveness of the healthcare system.
