NDC Condemns IEA’s Unilateral Presidential Debate Announcement

Mahama Calls for Change as Ghana’s Elections Near

H.E. John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)

The 2024 Campaign of former President John Dramani Mahama has issued a strong condemnation of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) Ghana following their recent announcement regarding the organization of a presidential debate for the 2024 elections.

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Spokesperson for President Mahama signed a press statement expressing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) displeasure with the IEA’s unilateral decision, which they deemed completely unacceptable.

The NDC emphasized that the IEA failed to engage or even inform them, one of Ghana’s major political parties, about their plans to hold a presidential debate. This move, according to the NDC, questions the motives behind the IEA’s actions.

“The Constitution of Ghana does not grant the IEA any authority to organize elections-related activities. The fact that the IEA has not shown the decency or respect to at least inform the NDC of its plans raises serious questions about its motives.”

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Spokesperson

“The IEA is clearly acting as a front for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and seeks to manipulate the electoral process in favour of the ruling party,” the press release asserted.

Highlighting their ongoing efforts to connect with the electorate, the NDC’s statement underscored the extensive engagement activities led by their presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, and his running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang.

“Mahama’s online and offline conversations have targeted a wide range of audiences and focused on addressing the needs and concerns of the people of Ghana.”

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Spokesperson

The NDC reiterated its dedication to meaningful engagement with the citizens, ensuring their voices are heard and their concerns addressed.

“Our well-planned engagements with various sectors of society across the country have been, and continue to be, extremely beneficial to the people of Ghana.”

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Spokesperson

This comment serves as a reminder of the NDC’s long-standing commitment to the Ghanaian populace and their active efforts in fostering direct communication and problem-solving initiatives.

Caution Against Misrepresentation

The NDC warned the IEA against using their name to promote the debate, labeling it a deliberate misrepresentation of the party. They expressed their disapproval of the IEA’s actions and cautioned them to refrain from such attempts.

“Ghanaians should remain assured that the NDC’s commitment to meaningful and respectful engagement with the people of Ghana is unwavering. We will continue to ensure that all Ghanaians’ voices are heard and their needs are addressed.”

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Spokesperson

The IEA has previously been involved in organizing presidential debates in Ghana, which are considered important platforms for candidates to present their policies and visions to the electorate. However, the NDC’s strong opposition to this announcement raises concerns about the impartiality and intentions behind such initiatives.

It remains to be seen how this disagreement will impact the organization of the debate and the broader electoral process.

As the 2024 elections approach, the dynamics between Ghana’s political entities and organizations like the IEA will be closely watched. The NDC’s firm stance highlights the importance of transparency and mutual respect in the electoral process.

The party’s commitment to continuous engagement with the citizens underscores its strategy to maintain direct communication with the electorate, ensuring their campaign remains people-focused.

The political atmosphere in Ghana remains charged as parties gear up for what promises to be a highly contested election. The actions and decisions of independent bodies like the IEA will undoubtedly significantly shape the pre-election landscape.
