In all, the 2023 Hogbetsotso Festival was a very colourful festival that exhibited various cultural heritages of the people of Anlo and the Volta Region. This year’s Hogbetsotso Za spans between the 27th of October, 2023, and the 5th of November 2023.
The festival featured a grand durbar of chiefs and people at Anloga, the traditional home of the Anlo–speaking Ewes. The durbar formed a significant part of the week–long Hogbetsotso festival which commemorated the migration of the Anlo – Ewes from the ancient walled city of Notsie in present-day Northern Togo to their present settlement.
The festival culminated in drumming and dancing to Husago by walking backwards which they claimed was to elude their enemies who might follow them after they had escaped the tyranny of the wicked King Agorkoli.

The Hogbetsotso Festival is a memorial festival celebrated by the people of Anlo Kingdom in remembrance of how their forefathers escaped the wickedness of the then King Agorkorli. It is celebrated to exhibit the unity, resilience, and deep-rooted culture of the Anlos, and also gives a platform to showcase the tourism potential of the area.
The name of the festival translates as ‘the festival of exodus’ or ‘coming from Hogbe, (Notsie)’ and has since its inception formed a core part of the history and heritage of the Ewes.
