A disqualified National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate hopeful for Madina, Prince Moses Zakaria, claims he will run as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections.

This claim was made by the aspirant, after the NDC’s Greater Accra Regional Vetting Committee disqualified him.

According to Mr. Zakaria, the committee determined that he did not deserve to be a member of the party and thus, disqualified him.

Venting to the media, the disqualified parliamentary candidate aspirant specified that he is persuaded that the MP for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, is responsible for his disqualification and as such, vows to ensure that Mr. Sosu loses the seat in the next general elections.

“Our elders have allowed Sosu and some other executives to undertake several machinations against me in Madina. Unfortunately, I have been disqualified in a way that is unfair by the vetting committee. I am declaring my independent candidature immediately. I will ensure that Sosu does not go back to parliament.”

Meanwhile, the NDC’s Greater Accra Regional Branch has defended its decision to disqualify Prince Moses Zakaria. The Vetting Committee disqualified the aspirant who is challenging incumbent MP, Francis-Xavier Sosu, after it was revealed that he served as General Secretary of the United Front Party (UFP).

Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, Greater Accra Regional Secretary, claims the party had no choice but to bar him from contesting on NDC ticket.

“We are having challenges with his eligibility. He was a member of the UFP. He has also not fulfilled the four-year mandate requirement of the NDC constitution. Based on the guidelines that have been given to us, we had no option but to get him disqualified.”

Abdul Fataw Disqualified From Tamale South Race

Moreover, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) also disqualified Bawah Abdul Fataw, a parliamentary aspirant in the Tamale South constituency.

The MP aspirant after his vetting wrote a letter to the party, seeking answers to why he was disqualified. However, the Northern regional vetting committee of the party which disqualified him on Monday, April 3, in a statement explained that he did not follow the party’s guidelines in the submission of his nomination.

Amongst the party’s guidelines which were used to disqualify Professor Abdul Fataw, was that he admitted to the Vetting Committee of not being an active member of the party for up to four (4) years before filing to contest.

“After reviewing the documents supporting your nomination to contest, the vetting Committee has determined that your contentions are not borne out by a true and proper interpretation of Article 41(8)(b) of the NDC Constitution vis-à-vis the above-cited guidelines”.

Northern Regional Vetting Committee

The party in its statement added, “therefore, the Northern Regional Vetting Committee of the Party has been left with no choice but to inform you that you are not qualified to contest in the party’s upcoming primaries for the Tamale South Constituency”.

“We wish to inform you that you have a right to appeal against our decision, if you disagree with our determination of your right to contest the primaries of the Party in the Tamale South Constituency. We wish you well in your political career in the future.”

Northern Regional Vetting Committee

The party has already started vetting some of its parliamentary aspirants across the various constituencies in the country, with high hopes of sifting out Crème de la crème, to contest on tickets of the NDC and win power in the 2024 upcoming elections.
