NDC’s Hamza Suhuyini Condemns Post-Election Violence, Urges Calm and Discipline

Hamza S. Suhuyini, Legal Practitioner and Member of the NDC Communication Team

A private legal practitioner and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Hamza S. Suhuyini has issued a stern caution to party supporters to avoid any acts of lawlessness, emphasizing that the NDC will not condone or shield members who engage in criminal activities.

Speaking on the widespread violence following Saturday’s polls, Mr Suhuyini outlined the party’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and preserving the democratic principles that underpin Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

“If it is done by our NDC supporters, we condemn it. Then I can assure you that if you’re an NDC person and you go out there and you misbehave yourself, engage in looting, and are arrested by the police even after the 7th of January 2025, no official of the government will come to your aid. Because we are not a criminal organization. We are an organization that is run by rules and regulations.”

Hamza Suhuyini reiterated that the NDC’s values, deeply rooted in discipline and respect for democratic institutions, will not permit any form of disorder among its supporters.

He invoked the legacy of the party’s founder, former President Jerry John Rawlings, to drive home the message. “This democracy—our Fourth Republic—is our baby. We cannot be seen destroying it simply because we have won an election. We must demonstrate to the people of Ghana that we are different and that we respect the institutions we have created“, he remarked.

Equal Accountability for All

The legal practitioner underscored the party’s stance on impartial accountability, noting that while the NDC will not shield its members from facing the law, the same expectation of enforcement applies to supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“If it is being done by NPP people, the state must act, and the Ghana Police Service must be seen arresting them. When we come into office, those people will face the full rigour of the law. That is the difference between the NDC and the NPP. We understand that this victory is not just for the NDC; it is a victory for Ghana.”

A Call for Responsible Communication

Hamza Suhuyini also urged party leaders and members at all levels to exercise restraint and responsibility in their public communications, warning against the arrogance of power that could erode the goodwill that brought the NDC to victory.

“The campaign season is over. It is no longer about inciting or engaging in ‘rambo-style’ communication. We now have to use our words to unite and rebuild the country. If we are not careful, the arrogance of power will set in unconsciously, and before we know it, we will lose the goodwill even before President Mahama assumes office on January 7.”

He commended President John Dramani Mahama’s measured and humble demeanor since the election victory, calling it a model for all party members.

“Look at President Mahama’s composure—he is not in an overly jubilant mood because he understands the enormity of the responsibility. This verdict is a humbling one, and we must switch from jubilation to action.

“Our conduct from today will determine how we love him and how loyal we are to him. This four-year term will define his legacy, and we must not destroy it before it begins.”

Hamza S. Suhuyini, Legal Practitioner and Member of the NDC Communication Team

Hamza Suhuyini concluded with a rallying call for all NDC supporters to rise to the occasion, emphasizing that the coming years would be critical for Ghana’s progress and the legacy of President Mahama.

“This is now the test—not just the electoral victory but how we conduct ourselves. The responsibility is on all of us to justify the confidence that Ghanaians have reposed in the NDC.

We campaigned for four years across all 16 regions of this country, not to destroy President Mahama’s legacy but to build it. Let us prove our loyalty through discipline and responsibility.”

Hamza S. Suhuyini, Legal Practitioner and Member of the NDC Communication Team

Hamza Suhuyini’s remarks serve as a clarion call for unity, discipline, and a focus on national development, setting a tone of accountability and humility for the NDC as it prepares to take the reins of government.
