Pokuase Interchange completion will impact other projects- Henry Quartey

The completed Pokuase Interchange

The Greater Accra regional minister, Henry Quartey, has intimated that the completion of the Pokuase interchange will impact infrastructural projects in the country.

Speaking at the opening of the Pokuase interchange, he said the construction of the interchange will not only impact the current but also future infrastructural projects in the country.

He averred that the commissioning of the interchange shows the commitment of the current administration with regards to the resolution of traffic and transport bottlenecks plaguing the country’s major cities.

“This interchange has been constructed under your [President Akufo-Addo] leadership to ensure the maximization to ensure productivity through significant reduction in delays and overall travel times, improved mobility on the anterior roads network with optimized safety for all road user classes.”

Moreover, he stated that the completion of the Pokuase interchange is consequently a pivotal achievement in facilitating mobility and accessibility with the mitigation of the congested scenarios of commuter traffic.

“Not only on the north-south Accra corridor but also for traversing traffic volumes on the east-west Awoshie- Pokuase-Kwabenya corridor.”

He then commended the President for the good work done in completing the project.

Interchange completion, a significant highlight

Also speaking at the opening;the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako Atta said the completion of the interchange is a significant highlight in President Akufo-Addo’s exceptional administration in the development of the country as far as the road sector is concerned.

He further said the construction of this interchange became necessary to eliminate unnecessary congestion on the Awoshie-Pokuase road. He also noted that the original contract for this interchange was a three tier which was later changed into a four-tier interchange.  

“However,;after critical value engineering exercise,;which led to some cost savings undertaken by the contractors,;the consultant and the department of urban roads, the government as the employer accepted and welcomed the revision to raise this original three tier interchange into a 4-tier as it is being witnessed today.”

The Roads Minister also indicated that provisions have been made for safe crossing for pedestrians who use the route.

“There is one under the interchange,;and the other at the lorry station at Pokuase bus station. Two foot bridges and a pedestrian walk way has been provided in the vicinity of this interchange.”

Road completion part of gov’ts comprehensive measures

The President also addressing the gathering said;the completion of the project is an integral part of the comprehensive measures by;the government to address issues of congestion in urban centres and to help improve travel times on major arterial roads.

He said the Pokuase Interchange,;together with two others, the Obetsebi and Tamale interchanges cost of $289 million.

The President also,;on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana,;expressed sincere appreciation to the African Development Bank, who jointly provided funds with Government for the execution of the project.

He then appealed to the users of the facility,;especially drivers, to adhere to the various road safety measures put in place for the safe use of the facility.
