Presidency Orders Recall of Diplomatic and Service Passports

A sample of Passport

In a decisive move aimed at enhancing the integrity of Ghana’s diplomatic credentials, the Office of the President has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to initiate a comprehensive recall of Diplomatic and Service Passports issued by the previous administration.

This directive, outlined in a memorandum signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President, underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring adherence to national and international standards in the issuance and administration of official travel documents.

According to the memorandum, this measure is part of broader efforts to maintain the credibility and efficiency of Ghana’s passport system while reinforcing the integrity of its diplomatic engagements.

“This exercise aligns with the Government’s commitment to ensuring the proper use and administration of official travel documents by national and International standards. The recall aims to prevent misuse, safeguard the country’s reputation and maintain the Integrity of our diplomatic engagements.”

The government emphasized that the initiative aligns with its pledge to ensure proper utilization of state resources and official documentation.

Key Steps Outlined for Implementation

To facilitate the smooth execution of the recall, the memorandum detailed specific steps the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to undertake.

This include directing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to issue a public announcement informing all holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports issued by the previous administration to return these documents to the Ministry for verification and possible reissuance.

A compliance deadline has been set for January 24, 2025, giving concerned individuals sufficient time to return their passports.  The Executive Secretary to President Mahama, in the memorandum, emphasized the importance of adhering to this timeline to ensure an orderly process.

He also called for a comprehensive review of all returned passports to confirm alignment with current eligibility criteria for such documents. This step, he noted is critical in ensuring that only deserving individuals retain access to these high-level travel privileges.

Upholding Standards and Promoting Accountability

The government believes this recall exercise will significantly contribute to restoring public confidence in the administration of official travel documents. It further aims to deter any attempts at abuse, which could undermine Ghana’s diplomatic image.

The Secretary to the President called on all stakeholders to cooperate fully with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in executing this vital exercise. The memorandum also extended an invitation for inquiries and clarifications, ensuring a transparent and inclusive process.

The coming weeks are expected to witness a heightened focus on compliance with this directive as the Ministry rolls out its implementation strategy.

Whether the move will significantly enhance the management of Ghana’s passport system remains to be seen, but its intent to foster accountability and transparency is clear.
