The Founder and President of the Law and Society Network, Maverick Kwame Addi Addison, has accused the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration of widespread deception and a failure to deliver on its promises.

In a scathing critique, the Ghanaian US-based activist described the NPP government as a “failure without shame, highlighting a series of unfulfilled promises, corruption scandals, and economic mismanagement that have plagued the administration’s seven-and-a-half-year tenure.

Addison’s criticism centred on the government’s economic promises, which have largely gone unmet.

He pointed out that despite claims of economic transformation and prosperity, the reality for many Ghanaians remains starkly different.

‘Many Ghanaians continue to struggle with high unemployment rates, rising cost of living, and inadequate access to basic services such as healthcare and education. The government’s failure to deliver on its economic promises has left many disillusioned and questioning the sincerity of its intentions”.

Corruption and Lack of Accountability

Addison further contended that President Akufo-Addo’s administration’s poor handling of corruption allegations has eroded public trust.

According to him, despite initial pledges to combat corruption, the government has been mired in several scandals including the controversial Agyapa Royalties deal, which led to the resignation of the former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu.

Other scandals, he noted include the procurement of Sputnik V vaccines at inflated prices and the Ameri Renovation deal, which he argued have only added to the perception of a government deeply entrenched in graft.

“Another area of concern is the administration’s handling of corruption allegations. Despite pledges to tackle corruption head-on, there have been numerous instances where government officials have been implicated in graft and other malpractices”.

Addison asserted that the administration’s inability to address these issues transparently has called into question its commitment to ethical governance.

Unrealistic Promises and Policy Failures

Furthermore, the Founder and President of the Law and Society Network pointed to the current government’s unrealistic promises, particularly those made during the 2016 election campaign.

He argued that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) promised to transform Ghana’s economy through industrialization and job creation remained unfulfilled.

He added that programs like the Free Senior High School (SHS) and One District, One Factory initiatives have been plagued with challenges, casting doubt on the administration’s ability to deliver on its commitments.

Addison emphasized that the Free SHS program, despite its potential, has faced significant implementation issues, with many students still unable to access quality education.

For the One District, One Factory initiative, touted as a game-changer for industrialization, Addison opined that the initiative is yet to produce the expected results in terms of job creation and economic growth.

Fabrications and Political Deception

The administration’s alleged penchant for spreading falsehoods about political opponents also received sharp criticism from the Founder and President of the Law and Society Network, Maverick Kwame Addi Addison.

He cited instances where the government when in opposition propagated baseless accusations against former President John Dramani Mahama, including claims of nepotism and involvement in various scandals.

“The administration also spread falsehoods about political opponents to gain an advantage. A notable example is the accusation that former President John Dramani Mahama was running a ‘family and friends’ government. This claim was later debunked, as it was revealed that only one member of Mahama’s family held a government position”.

These fabrications, designed to discredit opponents, according to Addison have undermined the democratic process and contributed to the erosion of trust in the government.

Despite President Akufo-Addo’s promises to avoid nepotism, Addison accused the administration of appointing numerous family members and close associates to key government positions.

This practice, he argued, has led to cronyism and favouritism, further diminishing the government’s credibility and its commitment to good governance.

Economic Mismanagement

Moreover, Maverick Kwame Addi Addison, the Founder and President of the Law and Society Network criticized the ruling government over its poor handling of the country’s economy.

Addison argued that the administration’s policies have failed to deliver the promised economic benefits, leaving ordinary Ghanaians to bear the brunt of these challenges.

As the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration nears the end of its tenure, Maverick Kwame Addi Addison underscored the critical need for accountability.

He stressed that the litany of unfulfilled promises, corruption scandals, and economic mismanagement witnessed under the current administration has left many Ghanaians disillusioned, questioning the government’s ability to lead.

As the country approaches the next election, he urged citizens to critically assess the administration’s track record and hold leaders accountable for their actions.
