President John Dramani Mahama will host His Excellency Petr Pavel, President of the Czech Republic, for a three-day State Visit to Ghana from April 8 to April 10, 2025.
A statement issued by the Minister of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, highlighted the significance of the visit in strengthening the deep-seated relations between Ghana and the Czech Republic.
“The visit from April 08 to 10, 2025, will be the first by a Czech President since diplomatic relations were established between Ghana and the Czechoslovakia in October 1959.
“It will also be the first State Visit hosted by President Mahama since his return to the Presidency in January 2025.”
Minister of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu,
The visit is expected to enhance bilateral cooperation, economic partnerships, and cultural ties between the two nations.
During his visit, President Pavel will hold high-level bilateral talks with President Mahama at the Jubilee House.
Discussions will focus on economic collaboration, trade expansion, investment opportunities, and technological cooperation.
Given Ghana’s rapidly growing economy and the Czech Republic’s industrial expertise, the visit is expected to result in key agreements in various sectors, including manufacturing, infrastructure development, health, and renewable energy.
One of the primary areas of focus will be economic cooperation, with both countries keen to explore investment opportunities and joint ventures.
Ghana has, in recent years, emerged as the fourth-largest trade partner of the Czech Republic among Sub-Saharan African nations, with Czech products gaining a strong reputation in the Ghanaian market.
Areas of existing collaboration include energy projects, sewage treatment, water purification, urban planning, construction, and tourism.
President Pavel’s visit is expected to deepen and expand this relationship, potentially leading to new trade agreements and development projects.
Key Activities and Highlights
As part of the visit, President Pavel will participate in a Ghana–Czech Business Forum, where he will address business leaders from both nations.
The forum will provide a platform for Ghanaian and Czech entrepreneurs to explore investment opportunities, particularly in industrialization and infrastructure development.
This engagement is expected to foster strategic business partnerships and further trade relations.
Another significant highlight of the visit will be the inauguration of a Czech-funded health facility, reflecting the Czech Republic’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s healthcare sector.
The facility, expected to enhance healthcare delivery in the country, is part of ongoing bilateral cooperation in the health sector.
This initiative underscores the Czech Republic’s role in Ghana’s health infrastructure development and is anticipated to facilitate knowledge transfer between medical professionals from both countries.
In addition to economic engagements, President Pavel will also visit historical and cultural sites in Ghana.
His itinerary includes a tour of the Osu Castle, a site of significant historical importance, and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, which honours Ghana’s first President and Pan-African icon.
These visits will serve as a symbol of the long-standing diplomatic relations between Ghana and the Czech Republic and reinforce cultural ties between the two nations.
To culminate the visit, President Mahama will host a State Dinner at the Jubilee House in honour of his Czech counterpart.
The dinner will be attended by high-ranking government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, and traditional authorities.
This event will not only celebrate the strong partnership between Ghana and the Czech Republic but also provide an opportunity to discuss future areas of cooperation in a relaxed diplomatic setting.
A History of Ghana-Czech Relations
Ghana and the Czech Republic share a long history of diplomatic and economic relations dating back to the pre-independence era when Czechoslovakia exported textiles, glass, musical instruments, and matches to the Gold Coast.
Following Ghana’s independence in 1957, relations between the two nations flourished, culminating in the establishment of official diplomatic ties in October 1959.
A significant milestone in their relationship occurred in 1961 when Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, visited Czechoslovakia.
The following year, Czechoslovakian President Antonín Novotný reciprocated the visit, further strengthening bilateral relations.
During the 1960s, Czech experts and engineers played a vital role in Ghana’s industrialization efforts, contributing to the establishment and operation of various factories.
In contemporary times, the Czech Republic has become a key development and trade partner for Ghana. Czech businesses continue to invest in Ghana’s infrastructure, energy, water management, and health sectors.
The upcoming State Visit by President Pavel is expected to rekindle the spirit of economic and diplomatic collaboration that characterized the early years of Ghana-Czech relations.
