Prestea MCE Assures Safety Of Appiatse Residents After Windstorm Destroys Tents

MCE of Prestea Huni Valley, Dr. Isaac Dasmani, has indicated that the resident of Appiatse who are being housed in tents are safe after a windstorm followed by a heavy downpour yesterday April 8, 2022.

Speaking on the heavy rains which destroyed some of the tents the affected residents are being housed in, Dr. Dasmani averred they have been moved into other tents to house them till they are provided with new tents.

The MCE revealed that some of the tents were completely damaged. According to him, fortunately, they still have some of the smaller tents which were not in use which will be given to the victims to manage due to the situation at hand.

“We have about four categories of the tents at the site. We have the ones that were provided by Goldfields Ghana. Then we have the one by the Red Cross, that is about 26 of them. We also have the ones that were provided by UNICEF. The ones that were affected were the ones provided by Goldfields and they were about 10 in number.”

Dr. Dasmani intimated that he has reached out to the Chairman of the Appiatse reconstruction Committee, Honorable Benito Owusu Bio, to ensure the temporal structures that are meant to accommodate the victims see a total completion.

“We have already put up the structure, it’s left with the roofing sheets. So, latest by Monday we should start roofing them so that they can relocate some of them into the place.”

Reconstruction efforts underway

Dr. Dasmani disclosed that for now, the Committee has prepared 89 rooms in the temporal structure to accommodate the affected persons whiles the actual reconstruction of their destroyed township is completed.  Touching on the progress of the Appiatse Community reconstruction, he indicated that efforts are underway to see to the reconstruction of the town.

“The Chairman and the team are working seriously. So, they also have a timetable which they are going to start the actual construction. If you go to the site right now, we have also molded a lot of blocks there. So far, we have molded about 3,000 bags of cement and we are still molding more.”

The MCE disclosed that ECG is also acquiring the poles and materials needed to ensure the town is duly reconstructed. “Whiles they were doing the grounds work, the urban roads were also there to look at the road works within the town.”

Dr. Dasmani’s comments followed reports of several tents housing residents of Appiatse at the Dumasi Resettlement Camp being destroyed by a windstorm that swept through the area on Friday April 8.  This comes at a time Rev. Dr. Joyce Aryee, the Chairman of the Appiatse Support Fund Committee announced that the quoted amount which includes donations from Corporate Institutions as well as patriotic individuals, would not be enough to complete the whole reconstruction project, considering the magnitude of damage caused at Appiatse and the chunk of work assigned them.

Dr. Aryee disclosed that her Committee has over the period of their operations, raised an amount of GHS35,884,423 towards the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Appiatse Community.
