Sam George Laments Over Delay In The Passage of The Anti- LGTBG Bill

Samuel Nartey George, MP Ningo-Prampram

The opposition National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George has lamented over the delay in the passage of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021 by Parliament.

Speaking on the state of the draft bill in a media interview on Wednesday, November 29 2023, the Ningo-Prampram lawmaker questioned the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Honourable Alban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin and the Business Committee of Parliament over the delay in the laying of the bill before the house for its passage.

According to the Maverick legislator, he does not yet understand the reason the Business Committee of Parliament has failed to lay the bill before the House for Members of Parliament to consider its approval or otherwise.

“Like I said on the floor of the house, we have the number to pass this bill, I can only urge the Speaker and Business Committee to table this bill. It is also beginning to drag its feet for far too long. I don’t see why the Business Committee is not tabling it, or why the Speaker is not requesting it. We need to have this bill taken because I don’t know what is holding it up. We need one day to pass this bill. It has been almost three years now and it is dragging for too long”.

Samuel Nartey George, MP Ningo-Prampram

Mr Nartey George thus urged the Business Committee of Parliament and the Speaker of Parliament to take urgent steps to lay the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values 2021 Bill before the House for the Members of Parliament to vote on its approval or disapproval as it continuously delay is untenable.

Sam George Fumes At Cardinal Turkson Comment On The LGBT Bill

Meanwhile, the Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament who is the main sponsor of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021 expressed disappointment over the comment made by Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson calling on Parliament not to criminalize homosexuality and LGBT in the country.

According to him, he is surprised why the Catholic Church and Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson have failed to criticise countries such as the United States of America, Canada and other European countries on their position on polygamy.

“This selective biblical benevolence is worrying. I heard the current President of the Catholic Bishop Conference say they also share that opinion. Again I will want to find out what goes on in the Catholic Church. With the greatest of respect, the predecessor of the Catholic Bishop Conference, the Archbishop of Tamale, and Bishop Naameh was one of the people who walked with me and my colleagues to present this bill to the Speaker of Parliament.

Samuel Nartey George, MP Ningo-Prampram

The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values 2021 was introduced to Ghana’s parliament in July 2021 by the Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament, Samuel Nartey George who is the lead Sponsor of the bill and other seven Members of Parliament including the Deputy Minister of Education, John Ntim Fodjour.

The main objective of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill,  2021 according to the proponent is to criminalise the promotion, advocacy, funding, and acts of homosexuality in the country.
