Hon. Sam George, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations.

The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Hon. Sam Nartey George, has issued a stern warning to New Patriotic Party (NPP) sympathizer Patrick Kwarteng Sarpong over what he described as “categorically false” and defamatory allegations regarding a Lexus vehicle.

According to a formal statement from his legal representatives, Hon. Sam George is taking serious exception to a post made by Mr. Sarpong—popularly known as P.K. Sarpong—on Facebook.

The post alleged that the MP received a luxury Lexus as a gift—an action supposedly in violation of a directive by President John Dramani Mahama against ministers accepting such gifts.

Sam George’s lawyers described the publication as a deliberate and damaging act intended to “tarnish the hard-earned reputation” of their client.

“We write on behalf of our client, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP) and the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology & Innovations, on whose instructions this letter is issued.”

The legal team condemned the claim, emphasizing that it lacked any basis in truth.

“This statement is categorically false. You are fully aware that your publication is devoid of truth. Nonetheless, you have proceeded to make this misinformation public, with the apparent intention of tarnishing the hard-earned reputation of our client. Such conduct is defamatory and injurious.”

The lawyers further issued a formal cease and desist order to Mr. Sarpong, instructing him to refrain from publishing any additional falsehoods about the MP.

They detailed specific demands to be fulfilled within seven days—by May 27, 2025—failing which they threatened to initiate legal proceedings, including but not limited to a defamation lawsuit.

Furthermore, the legal notice outlined three specific corrective actions demanded from Mr. Sarpong.

These include the immediate removal of the defamatory Facebook post, a public retraction with the same reach and prominence as the original statement, and an unqualified apology addressed directly to Hon. Sam George.

“Failure or refusal to comply with these demands will leave us with no option but to initiate legal proceedings against you, including but not limited to a defamation suit, without further notice.”

Hon. Sam George also personally responded to the allegation, making his position unmistakably clear, calling out what he labeled as dishonesty and mischief.

“To Mr. P.K. Sarpong, I have decided to let the world see how dishonest and untruthful you are. I am a serving Member of Parliament of Ghana who is entitled to a car loan. How a vehicle I purchased under that scheme became a gift from a businessman can only be a vile, evil, and dishonest claim.”

Hon. Sam Nartey George

He reiterated that the vehicle in question was lawfully acquired through a legitimate car loan scheme accessible to Members of Parliament. The implication that it was a gift, he stated, was not only false but deeply offensive.

The MP emphasized his commitment to transparency in public service. “As a public officer, I am committed to full disclosure and transparency,” he stated.

He then issued a direct challenge to Mr. Sarpong: “Apologise or prepare to face the consequences before the law.”

Accordingly, Sam George reiterated that the legal notice serves as an official warning. “Notice is hereby served for you to do the needful or prepare to face the full consequence of your reckless indiscretion.”

Meanwhile, defamation suits have increasingly become a tool for public figures to counter what they view as misinformation in the media landscape, particularly on social platforms.

Given the direct nature of Mr. Sarpong’s public post and the equally firm rebuttal by Hon. Sam George, this may well become a significant case in the realm of political defamation in Ghana.

As of now, P.K. Sarpong has yet to issue a formal response or remove the post in question. All eyes will be on how he handles the deadline set for May 27.
