A member of the ruling New Patriotic Party Communications Team, Awal Mohammed has lauded the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for making history by being elected as the first flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party from the northern part of Ghana.

According to Mr Awal Mohammed, the Vice President’s election as the flagbearer for the ruling New Patriotic Party is a testament to his hard work, and dedicated service to the New Patriotic Party and Ghana as well.

He noted that the Vice President’s ability to secure the highest number of votes as a first-time presidential aspirant in the history of the New Patriotic Party is highly commendable.

“History has been made that at least a northerner is going to lead the NPP into a major election. But it is not just a northerner but a competent one. The Vice President has demonstrated his competence over time; he is a technocrat who over time has turned into a politician. Before 2008 Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was a technocrat and academic and from 2008 to today, he has become an active politician and we have seen his capabilities.

“When he [Dr Bawumia] got into the political landscape he changed the political narratives in this country, not just the fourth republic but throughout Ghana’s political history. The Vice President led the charge of a major political party in 2016; you remember, Dr Tony Aidoo said in 2016 that the NDC lost the elections because they did not have a single person who could march the Dr Bawumia’s political acumen”.

He noted that the Vice President, Dr Mohamudu Bawumia since his appearance in Ghana’s political landscape has increased the electoral fortunes of the New Patriotic Party in the northern part of the country, hence he is very optimistic that his candidature would improve the party’s votes in the 2024 general elections.

“Looking at what he has done over time; looking at his track record and his electoral fotunes when he joined the party in 2008, in the north for instance our [NPP] electoral fortunes have increased. In 2004 we [NPP] had 34% of the popular votes and in 2008 when he came it was 38.1% by 2020 the mother northern region; which include the Northern Region, Savannah, North East where both candidates [Dr. Bawumia and Mahama] come from when you put the votes together; presidential result, we [NPP] had 45% of the votes”.
