I won’t accept fictionalized results of a flawed election- Mahama

Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama.

The Abossey Okai Spare parts Dealers Association has debunked claims that it has petitioned former President John Dramani Mahama to contest for President, emphasizing that it does not dabble in politics.

Some news portals across the country reported on February 21, 2023, that some four unions, including the Abossey Okai spare parts dealers, visited the former President to petition him to run for President in the 2024 general elections.

According to the association, its attention has been drawn to the publication in some media outlets and its content is not true. It explained that those who joined the group to meet the former President are neither the Executives nor members of the Abossey Okai Spare parts Dealers Association.

“We wish to state that, Abossey Okai Spare parts Dealers Association is a non-political Association and will not embark on that action. Our office is open to every political party and that is the reason why in every election year, all the political parties troop to our office and have deliberations with us.”

Contained in a statement signed by Clement Boateng, a co-chairman of the association, it revealed that the group which met with the Mr Mahama were merely people from Abossey Okai who decided to join the group to meet the former President. It expressed surprise that these persons “paraded” themselves as Abossey Okai Spare parts Dealers Association.

“We don’t dabble in politics and will continue to engage with every party in government to come out with policies that will have a positive impact on our business as it has always been.”

Supporters of John Mahama upbeat about chances of winning

Meanwhile, the dean of the regional chairmen of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed the commitment of party members in ensuring John Mahama wins, following the latter’s declaration of intent to contest for the flagbearership position of the party. He stated that the former President will go unopposed considering the throng of supporters in his favor.

“All the regional chairmen for the National Democratic Congress from Upper East to Western North, each of them in their own capacity support John Dramani Mahama and almost all of them are here. I can tell you even the whole country, almost all the constituency chairmen, you won’t get two or three that will go against John Dramani Mahama.

“In NDC, we respect commitment, loyalty and someone who has the country at [heart] and that is John Dramani Mahama… The other time, John had ninety-five plus percent, 13th May, John will not get anything less than 98%…”

Prior to this, the youth of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region expressed the need for the former President to run unopposed for the flagbearership race of the party ahead of the 2024 polls.

In a statement signed by the NDC’s Volta Regional Youth Organiser, Mathias Alagbo, the group argued that given the mess created by the NPP government, John Mahama is the most experienced hand in Ghana who has once led the country through difficult times and built solid economic foundations that everyone can attest to.

The group reckoned that there is no need for flagbearer elections, but instead, the party should directly endorse the former President as flagbearer of the party for the 2024 presidential elections.

It further called on all relevant stakeholders in the party, including the National Council of Elders, to commence necessary engagements to achieve a JDM NDC 2024 Flagbearership role without contest.

The statement highlighted that meagre resources should be reserved to support the rebuilding efforts to get a better fighting chance in the 2024 general elections.
