The Director of Communications of the governing New Patriotic Party, Richard Ahiagbah has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress of engaging in petty tribal politics against President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo over his comment about the flood victims of the Akosombo dam spillage.
In response to criticism against President Akufo-Addo regarding his comment during his tour on Monday, October 16 2023, the New Patriotic Party Director of Communications decried the excessive politicization by the National Democratic Congress relating to the flood victims of the Akosombo dam spillage.
According to Mr. Ahiagbah President Akufo-Addo’s remark at Mepe meant to decry the constant politicization of issues by the National Democratic Congress particularly in the Volta Region.
He further accused the National Democratic Congress of its constant false campaign that the New Patriotic Party and its governments do not care about the plight and challenges of the people of the Volta Region.
“The President simply said that he was not there because the people voted or did not vote for him, but because he is the President for all Ghanaians including the good people of Mepe”.

Ahiagbah Defends President Akufo-Addo’s Comment
Again, the ruling New Patriotic Party Director of Communications, Mr Richard Ahiagbah defended the comment made by President Akufo-Addo during his tour of the communities that were affected by the flood from the Akosombo dam spillage.
According to him, there is no wrong in President Akufo-Addo’s remark. He noted that President Akufo-Addo intended to draw the attention of the general public to the ‘divisive tribal politics’ of the National Democratic Congress about the pain and suffering of the flood victims.
Mr. Ahiagbah therefore admonished the opposition National Democratic Congress to avoid taking advantage of the victims of the Akosombo dam spillage to score cheap political points.
“It is needless to weaponize the pain of the people for political advantage, but the NDC cannot help itself because that’s all they have got to sell. Sad”!

Meanwhile, Mr. Abdulai Mahama, a Road and Building Engineer has advised the government to consider the construction of irrigation dams downstream of the Akosombo dam to control the level of havoc its spillage causes yearly.
According to him, the irrigation dams would aid in holding water anytime the Volta River Authority (VRA) spills water from the Akosombo Dam.
The Volta River Authority has justified the spillage of both the Akosombo dam and the Kpong dam arguing that the exercise it embarked on was very necessary to prevent the water from overtopping and compromising the integrity of the dam.
According to report thousands of residents in South Tongu, North Tongu, Central Tongu, Asuogyaman, and several other residents at the banks of the Volta River have been displaced and had their properties destroyed due to the spillage of the Akosombo dam and Kpong dam by the Volta River Authority.
The Volta River Autherity (VRA) commenced the controlled water spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams on September 15, 2023, due to a consistent rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo reservoir.
