Hon Peter Lanchene Toobu, Member of Parliament (MP) for the good people of Wa West Constituency in the Upper East Region, has stated that the real nature of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) was to make noise in opposition and deliver nothing while in power.
Speaking in an interview today December 21, the lawmaker noted that people who are not politicians including pastors and critics of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), find their voices when the NPP is in opposition.
According to him, some of these ‘Men of God’ take the noise to the hilt by offering politically tainted prayers and preaching. He disclosed that, coupled with the above, members of the NPP make all manner of noise which turns out to be “much ado about nothing.”
Hon Toobu noted that all these pastors and critics suddenly lose their voices when the New Patriotic Party is in government.
“When Ghana is quiet, you need nobody to be told that the NPP is governing. Yes! Look at what is happening with the construction of the National Cathedral yet these pastors are mute.”
Hon Toobu
The Member of Parliament revealed that, when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by former President Mahama was in power, the NPP, then an opposition party, made all sort of allegations against the then government, only to come to power and repeat the same mistakes they spoke about some years back. He then emphasized that there is relatively a complete silence when the same NPP is given the mantle to handle the affairs of the country.
“This government has gone to the contingency vault to withdraw funds for the construction of the National Cathedral,” he accused, disclosing that funds cannot be withdrawn from the vault for projects that will last for four years and more.
Hon Toobu Stated that the government will end up using GHS3 billion on the project and it will still be at the foundation levels. “This is not an era for building a cathedral for God when people are hungry,” he opined.
Those Who Do Not Share My Views On National Cathedral Are Like Sanballat And Tobias
Meanwhile, His Excellency President Akuffo Addo has noted that he will not change his mind with regards to his decision to complete the building of the National Cathedral to honour his promise to God.
His Excellency’s comments were made in the wake of calls for him to put on hold the building of the controversial project and to focus on resolving the current economic crisis the country is facing.
According to the him, those who do not share his views to complete the project are like the Biblical Sanballat and Tobias in the days of Nehemiah.
“Just like Sanballat and Tobias, in the days of Nehemiah, there are some who do not share my views on the building of the National Cathedral, I respect their right to differ but I am confident in my decision, by the vast numbers of enthusiastic supporters of this project whose spiritual dimension is limitless.”
Akuffo Addo
President Akuffo Addo indicated that the National Cathedral will signify an appreciation to God who he believes has spared the country from conflicts and plagues over the years.
He further noted that the project whose 2023 budgetary allocation approval has been suspended, will serve not only as the country’s collective thanksgiving to the Almighty for the blessings He has bestowed on the nation but also for sparing Ghanaians the many civil wars that have destroyed the histories of virtually all neighboring countries of Ghana and the outbreak of deadly mass epidemics.
