David Lammy Appointed As Deputy Prime Minister

The UK government has announced plans to evacuate British nationals from Israel using charter flights once the country’s airspace is reopened. As tensions with Iran remain high, Whitehall officials are actively coordinating exit strategies for thousands of British and dual nationals currently in Israel.

British citizens in Israel for holidays, business trips, or family visits, particularly those who are temporary residents, are expected to receive priority. However, the Foreign Office stressed that the operation would be dictated by demand, and that “the safety of all British nationals was its top priority.”

Foreign Secretary David Lammy assured the public that the UK was taking steps to support its citizens during the escalating conflict.

“The UK will provide charter flights for British nationals from Tel Aviv when airspace reopens. Register your presence to receive further guidance.”

Foreign Secretary David Lammy

The Foreign Office has urged British nationals in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories to continue following local guidance regarding their movements and to weigh their decision to leave based on their situation.

Thousands have already registered with the Foreign Office to receive updates, although the government has yet to advise a full-scale departure or recommend that individuals relocate to Tel Aviv for extraction.

Among those registered are many dual British-Israeli nationals who are not expected to request assistance from the UK, though a smaller group has reached out for direct support.

Registration Crucial For Flight Updates

A No. 10 spokesperson reiterated the importance of maintaining contact with citizens on the ground.

“We are advising British nationals to continue to register their presence in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, to be contactable with further guidance on these flights.”

The announcement comes against the backdrop of escalating hostilities in the region. After Israel initiated strikes on Iran, citizens across the country have been forced into bomb shelters in anticipation of retaliatory attacks. According to reports, at least 24 people have been killed in Israel, with hundreds more wounded.

The toll in Iran has been even more devastating. A Washington-based Iranian human rights organization reports that at least 657 people have died, including 263 civilians, with over 2,000 others wounded. While Israel insists the airstrikes are aimed at disrupting Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Iranian authorities maintain that their nuclear programme is entirely peaceful.

While air evacuations remain grounded due to closed airspace, land routes are still available, and some UK nationals have already managed to leave Israel through these channels.

However, the UK government has faced criticism for the speed and clarity of its response. Questions were raised after it emerged that the families of British diplomats had already been evacuated, while regular citizens were left with only general advice to follow local directives.

The Foreign Office has defended its approach, noting that the removal of diplomatic dependents was carried out as a “precautionary measure.” Despite the precaution, embassy operations in Tel Aviv and consulate functions in Jerusalem continue, with key personnel remaining in place.

As the crisis unfolds, British nationals in the region are urged to remain vigilant and informed. The situation remains highly fluid, and the government is expected to release further guidance once commercial and charter air travel becomes viable again.
