President Akufo-Addo urges security agencies to work “dispassionately”

President Akufo-Addo has called on the members of the Governing Council of the National African Peer Review Mechanism to ensure the country is represented on the African Peer Review Panel (APRP).

President Akufo-Addo.

President Akufo-Addo has cautioned security agencies to work dispassionately in the execution of their duties in the round up to the December elections

Speaking in an interview, he commended the law enforcers on their diligence, further urging them to be non-partisan when enforcing the law.

As such, anyone found flouting the law should be subjected to the dictates of the law.

“The way in which the police service is acting now is the way in which I think the police should act, which is to be even-handed in the application of the law. Police and security agencies in the country should be color-blind when it comes to enforcing the law. What I mean about color-blind is politically color-blind. The fact that there is an NPP government in place should not lead to a situation whereby if some NPP people are found to be involved in wrongdoing, somehow the police will turn their back on it. We saw that in the past and it doesn’t engender any good feeling in the country”.

Additionally, President Akufo-Addo noted that their integrity and non-prejudiced stance in the discharge of duty will bolster the waning confidence of citizen in the security agencies.

“That should be the way in which the police and law enforcement agencies work; dispassionately, they look for clues and if it lands on the doorsteps of a Minister, MP in the Minority or Majority, they will go forward and act accordingly and not looking over their shoulder to decide whether or not what they are doing is a favor to those in office… If that happens consistently enough and people see that the law is even-handed in its application, it brings confidence”.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has appealed to political parties and its supporters to desist from acts that could jeopardize the peace in the country.

He made this call when he was commissioning the refurbished Hall of Trade Unions of the Trades Union Congress.

“On the larger issue of the peace of our nation in these sensitive times, let me assure you of the wholehearted efforts that are being made by my Government and me to ensure the peace and stability of the nation, as we enter the home straight of the electioneering campaign.

“I am calling on all political actors and the citizenry, as a whole, to commit themselves to a peaceful process, and to forego any resort to violence”.

He further indicated that, the police service have registered their commitment in ensuring the enforcement of law in the dispensation of their duties.

“The Inspector General of Police, and the other heads of the law enforcement agencies, have made abundantly clear their determination to enforce the laws of the land, including the law banning vigilantism, in an impartial, even-handed manner, without recourse to political colour, to secure the peace of the nation. I support fully their attitude, and will give them my maximum backing”.
