Kevin De Bruyne put a first-half penalty wide as Manchester City failed to close the gap on Liverpool following a lively 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool set up for an early blitz and got the opener through Mohamed Salah’s penalty after Kyle Walker left a knee on Sadio Mane (13), but City found rhythm and levelled as Gabriel Jesus poked under Alisson (31) following a wonderful touch for his sixth goal in seven Premier League games.

In a pulsating first half, City were then awarded a penalty by VAR after Joe Gomez handled De Bruyne’s cross, but the Belgian struck the spot-kick wide.

Jesus’ unmarked header wide the only clear-cut chance in the second half and it remained level as Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to move top of the Premier League, but kept their five-point leader over City, who have a game in hand.

Bruno Fernandes scored twice as Manchester United came from behind to win 3-1 at Everton and ease the pressure on under-fire manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Everton had made the perfect start at Goodison Park as Bernard fired them ahead after 19 minutes on his first Premier League start of the season.

United levelled matters six minutes later thanks to Fernandes’ powerful header, with the Portuguese then putting his side ahead when his cross – intended for Marcus Rashford – ended up in the back of the net.

Fernandes capped off a fine individual display when setting up substitute Edinson Cavani for his first United goal in injury time.

As a result, United have moved up to 13th in the table after recording a seventh straight away win in the league.

Ollie Watkins scored twice as an abject Arsenal were soundly beaten 3-0 by Aston Villa at the Emirates.

The visitors might have been ahead after just 47 seconds when John McGinn’s strike was disallowed for offside upon VAR review with Ross Barkley deemed to have been in Bernd Leno’s eyeline.

But the reprieve was short-lived as Bukayo Saka inadvertently stabbed Matt Targett’s cross into his own net midway into the first half.

Watkins then took centre stage with two well-taken finishes in the second half to complete a fine away victory and a statement of intent from Dean Smith’s men.

The result moves Villa up to sixth in the table while Arsenal slip to 11th.

Chelsea continued their improvement with a fourth straight win as they fought back from a goal down to beat struggling Sheffield United 4-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea conceded for the first time in five games through David McGoldrick’s clever flick from a Sander Berge strike but Tammy Abraham levelled as his weak effort into the ground beat Aaron Ramsdale.

Chelsea completed the turnaround as Ben Chilwell converted Ziyech’s deep cross at the far post, though both Ramsdale and Max Lowe should have done more to keep the defender out.

Man-of-the-match Ziyech assisted Chelsea’s third as Thiago Silva nodded in ahead of Ramsdale from a free-kick, before Timo Werner smashed home the fourth as the ball broke into his path.

Harry Kane’s 88th-minute header snatched a 1-0 win for Tottenham at West Brom, temporarily taking them to the top of the table.

Tottenham were short on creativity for much of the encounter at The Hawthorns, with West Brom the better side in the first half and having six shots to Spurs’ one.

Tottenham improved after the break but still struggled to break down a well-drilled West Brom defence. However, a moment of hesitation from goalkeeper Sam Johnstone allowed Kane to nod home his 150th Premier League goal.

Jamie Vardy scored one penalty and missed another as Leicester went top of the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Wolves at the King Power Stadium.

Vardy converted from the spot after Max Kilman had handled Dennis Praet’s cross, which referee Anthony Taylor only awarded after checking the VAR review monitor.

Wolves’ second-half performance showed more attacking threat with Pedro Neto and Ruben Neves testing Kasper Schmeichel, but the Foxes, who could have secured victory late on through Harvey Barnes, saw out the game to go top of the Premier League.

Ebere Eze inspired Crystal Palace to a fine 4-1 win over Leeds United at Selhurst Park. Scott Dann’s first strike since December 2017 gave Palace an early lead , as the centre-back rose to head beyond Illan Meslier from Eze’s corner. Eze, making only his fourth league start since his £19.5m switch from QPR last summer, then produced a brilliant free-kick to extend Palace’s lead.

Leeds striker, Patrick Bamford thrashed in his seventh Premier League goal of the season to reduce the arrears.

Helder Costa then stabbed Patrick Van Aanholt’s cross past Meslier at his near post prior to the break before Jordan Ayew sealed the victory with a cool finish from Wilfried Zaha’s pass in the second half.

Ademola Lookman had a terrible attempted Panenka penalty saved in the last minute as Fulham slipped to a 1-0 defeat at West Ham.

The game came to life in injury time as Tomas Soucek fired home but Fulham were given a life-line when VAR awarded a spot-kick for a foul on Tom Cairney.

After Aleksandar Mitrovic had missed their previous penalty at Sheffield United, the responsibly was taken by Lookman but his weak, chipped penalty was read by Lukas Fabianski.

Lookman was inconsolable at the full-time whistle as his team put in a good performance but left without any points.

draw
Brighton and Burnley play out dull draw

Brighton missed the opportunity to register a first home win of the season as Danny Welbeck squandered chances in a 0-0 draw with Burnley.

Brighton bossed large parts of the game and had 19 shots on goal but lacked the clinical finish. The result leaves Burnley, whose only shot on target came after 14 minutes, remaining winless this season with only one goal scored from open play in their seven Premier League matches.
