Ghana’s Democracy Under Attack- Haruna Iddrisu

Ghana's democracy under attack

Minority leader and a leading Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Haruna Iddrisu

Minority leader and a leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Haruna Iddrisu says Ghana’s democracy has come under severe attack following the declaration by the Electoral Commission, declaring Candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the winner of the 2020 Presidential elections.

According to him, the circumstances surrounding the victory of candidate Akufo-Addo in the just ended general elections is a heavy blow to the democracy of Ghana and thus the country needs some rescue urgently.

Speaking during a press briefing, hours after the Electoral commission announced the Presidential results, he intimated that, if the situation is not rescued, this attack will fester and grow into future elections and that will disfigure the nations track record as a true democratic nation.

According to Haruna Iddrisu, efforts by NDC flagbearer, John Mahama to have the cited malfeasance remedied before any substantive pronouncement was made about the election results were blatantly ignored by the Electoral Commission chairperson, Jean Mensah.

“It is even regrettable to note that this evening before her declaration, John Dramani Mahama contested the election as a candidate and therefore a stakeholder and interested party.

“Even when he filed a petition to the Electoral Commission detailing his concerns in the process of collation leading to a declaration, that was treated with the utmost contempt. That we consider unacceptable.”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), then proceeded to say it will not accept the result of the 2020 presidential elections as announced by the Electoral Commission due to overwhelming evidence that proves that the party’s candidate, John Dramani Mahama won the 2020 election.

Haruna Iddrisu stated that the evidence available to them makes it impossible for us to accept the spurious and hurried conclusion of the Electoral Commission of Ghana and thus will vehemently reject and resist the results of the elections as declared.

“As a party, we have had extensive consultations and detailed analysis of the outcome of the elections as announced by Jean Mensa, the EC chair.

“We have come to only one irresistible conclusion, that it is a flawed discredited election and therefore we reject the presidential result without any reservation.”

He added that the NDC intends to take decisive and concrete steps both with the Presidential and Parliamentary results to overturn this brazen and shameless attack on our fledgling democracy.

His comments followed the outright rejection and resistance of the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections result by the NDC citing electoral malfeasance in certain areas including Techiman South.

He concluded that the NDC flagbearer, John Mahama will in due course address the country and the international community concerning the electoral malfeasance that culminated into the NPP victory with hard evidence.
